I didn’t notice any warnings or comments from the moderators—and then suddenly it was closed. Why?

On the other hand, there are threads that remain open even though they’re heavily moderated.

Is there any logic or consistency to this?

I have some moderation experience in various places, and let me tell you it's neither pleasant nor thankful.

I didn't like that thread getting closed either (it's been fun lol), but don't question it. It's boiling down to "house rules, take it or leave it" really.

You might recall the vinyl thread that seemed to go on forever (until it didn't). That got pretty contentious, a pissing match, between those still interested in the format and still using it and those who thought the whole vinyl revival was a scam. I found the food fight consistently amusing but it did run itself into the ground.

My sense is that something very similar happened to this thread, save that the discussion shifted to another subject, mainly the limits of how much bass one can get out of a speaker. That might be an interesting thread, esp. for DIY types, but it was a fair bit aways from the OP's topic.

In the end, it’s a judgement as to whether the conversation is starting to circle the rhetorical drain. There are a couple of ‘garbage’ threads that remain open for people who want to keep beating certain dead horses.

I’m not trying to criticize; I just want to understand how it works.

I occasionally moderate larger events and seminars, but I definitely wouldn’t feel confident moderating anything in an English-language forum.

I already find myself thinking far too often about exactly what someone might have meant, and sometimes I correct the automatic translation of what I’ve written because it expresses something completely different from what I wrote in German.

Of course no app can give you insight into the unspoken subtleties of a language. That only comes with experience. Sort of like jaywalking in Germany.
