Why are there so many Snake Oil in this business?

It’s a marketing steamroller that coincides with actual performance literally diving below the noisefloor in the eighties . Pun intended.

You could not buy some japanese hifi and be happy no no :)

It then slowly turned into very weird cargo cult design practices that performs worse than normal hifi , read all about it in TAS et all it had gone full circle the next generation of ”designer” actually believed the hype .

Nowadays it think there is a mix of real charlatans and misslead tragic figures promoting the snake oil out of belief.

I feel sorry for the japanese engineers of the past turning out perfectly functioning amps at good quality and decent price .

…To be outmarketed by men in sheds cobbling together things like AudioNote or sugden :D

I don’t mind someone making a SET ‘amplifier’ ( effects box) but what exercises me is when they then market ‘upgrades’ for example silver wire appears extremely popular with the snake oil crowd .

You mean teflon insulated silver wire. It makes it easy to "see" the improvement. Although with the SET crowd they might be using hand woven cotton insulation.

Silver wire make sense .. After all, you can make necklaces for the whole family.

Hmmm... this has all got me musing about audiophiles and insulation.
It's kinda surprising that linen insulation hasn't caught on -- isn't it?
  ;)

I'm not sure linen or even the teflon can minimizes triboelectric noise and such catastrophic influences.. But the linen is a neck friendly at least

Hmmm.....linen would be good I think. In WWII some early radar used capacitors with linseed oil because it worked better at high frequencies. Yet I've never seen hifi that used those. Probably because they don't last very long. Seems a perfect audiophile product. The caps would have to be like tubes in sockets so you can replace them once a year.

Teflon is one of the worst insulators for triboelectric noise. The combination of silver and teflon is perhaps the worst combination.

Did you say tribal-electric noise?

;)

PS I've become quite fond of linen shirts in my dotage. It's partly the weight and feel (in the summertime), but I think mostly it's because it's OK for it to be wrinkled. :)

oooo, I dont know, I swear my hair feels better after certain shampoos than others.
Yeah i didn't mean there is absolutely no difference just all the additives that lure the women in are largely snake oil

"...to create the finest and most uniform layer of Zirconium and tungsten followed by a layer consisting of aluminium titanium nitride. Finally, the discs are coated with a layer of zirconium."

Missing the depleted uranium , it's optional !
:D :)
it's optional !

Dammit, there's always a catch it seems;)
