Why are single drivers disliked to such an extent by most in this forum?

Never knew the active 901 ever existed. Integrated in the foot !

The drivers used in the 901 were not really top tier though.

Bose always wants to make something 'different' than other manufacturers. That and especially their marketing was brilliant.
When I was young and I asked someone what the best speakers were no doubt the majority would say Bose.
Even when they came out with the milk carton speakers it remained the same.
Their name is more legendary then the actual product. I never cared much for any of their speakers.

The pro range from 402 to 802 still use full range drivers. Also the Panaray uses more and smaller diameter full range drivers.

Never heard about something like Bose in 70'th to 90'th of last century here. My first encounter was at my wife's uncle 15 or some more years ago who sat upon the SW in his chair, 3-4 m apart of tiny small speakers put in the left and right corner of the window, explaining, this would be the revolution of listening to music ....but this is completely opposite of this topic..

Every audio magazine, lifestyle magazine etc all had Bose advertisements (at least in the Netherlands)
Yep... the milk carton speakers (with the behind the sofa SW) too were advertised everywhere as well.

Bose originals were the worst speakers I ever had to suffer listening to (briefly). Demented concepts implemented even more badly. I am told they have made some good products since, I wouldn't know.

Bose has a good sized business in fatigue testing machines that run 450 million cycles at 40-50Hz to simulate your heart beating for 15 yrs, a requirement of the FDA. I know I have contracted with them on such. They simulate other organs and body parts, lungs and knees and such as well. Those tests take months to setup, months to run and the whole time your hoping nothing cracks. I think the last one we did it cost about $150k even though most of time the machines are just running.

Bose still has a very strong reputation among mainstream consumers. About 4-5 years ago, I did a traffic analysis of searches on Amazon and a significant fraction (it must have been at least 10%, maybe more) of all searches for audio products included the word "Bose" (the other "gorillas" were Beats and Sony). Implying people didn't even consider other brands before buying something. Marketing really works, if you do enough of it...

I think this is mostly due to their headphone lines vs. speakers, but the point stands.

Their headphones are actually pretty decent. Good NC, easy to operate and good tonal balance (N.C. active).
These headphones also are single driver .... :)
