Closest I have been to a hurricane was in Atlantic City in September 2000, I think it was the tail end of Isaac. The waves were coming up over the boardwalk and lapping up to the windows of the casino. The roof leaked a bit and the staff had to cover some of the electronic equipment with tarps.

Of course we continued to gamble.

Here in UK we've only had one in living memory, October 1987, but it really only affected the south. We just had an especially wet and windy night, which isn't that unusual.

Hope everyone made it through Milton okay.
That wasn't really a hurricane; the winds certainly got up, but the rainfall was nothing like that from a hurricane.

I've seen about 20 years of weather here in Central Fl but never seen the combined rainfall anything like this.
Our marina dock is totally submerged and we've had all boat owner abandon the dock and pull their boats on shore.
Boat house has about a foot of water inside, quite a mess.
Thankfully home owners sustained minimal damage.

That resembles my dock a couple of years ago. My riding mower was on a piece of land next to my shed in my yard surrounded by water.
But none came into the house. Glad that y'all are mostly OK down there in that Orlando area.

Don't know. Is it really that bad. Media often exaggerates things. Couple flooded streets is not a catastrophe.

Things got real quiet after it was less horrible than predicted.

I lived in Florida for over 60 years, and it was always good when the forecasters predicted worse than what happened.

Except when they told Northeast Florida to evacuate, and nothing happened.

That’s really bad, like crying wolf. Causes trouble the next time.

I guess that depends on if you still have a home dry and still habitable. Or have lost a loved one.

For those 100s who no longer have a home, or have lost someone close to them it is a total catastrophe.

50 billion in damage also sounds pretty catastrophic.

I watch videos where people complain because of no cell phone reception ... first world problems. I can not imagine it being that bad.

not quite true. probably all is insured. so all will be replaced.

I lost a kitten couple days ago and that was devastating... so that one I can understand.

What an ignorant couple of posts. That's plenty from you.

I saw reports of threats against FEMA workers. What is this world coming too? It's hard enough to deal with Mother Nature out of control. People that make it harder for relief workers to do their job should be jailed and throw away the key.

Sleeper troll.A few trollish posts when he first joined two years ago, then nothing for nearly two years, then started again a few months ago, leading to this.

Weird.

Typhoon Soudelor, (the third most intense tropical cyclone worldwide in 2015 after Hurricane Patricia and Cyclone Pam as well as the strongest tropical cyclone of the 2015 Pacific typhoon season). The Joint Typhoon Warning Center assessed one-minute sustained winds at 285 km/h (180 mph), making Soudelor a Category 5-equivalent super typhoon. And we had 223 MPH gusts.
After the the Typhoon, FEMA showed up.
It took 3 days of them being on the island of Saipan for this to happen: the arrogant FEMA workers that came (particularly the ones trying to run things), the governor banned them from the island (justly so [I was there]) because of their actions and inactions.
So they are not all Hunky-Dory. Or even close to it.
We were much better at handling the disaster ourselves and the aid that we received without them interfering.

Yes, we should tell the victims that reports of their deaths are exaggerated.
Florida hurricane is a disaster. North Carolina and Tennessee are catastrophes.

That’s a common reaction to FEMA, under all presidents.

I don't have experience with your situation, but I can't imagine people who choose to live in disaster prone areas would be in favor of dissolving FEMA and all recovery funding?

Some people don't want help. But the vast majority appreciate it.
