A recent thread about critics got me thinking about the online community of cigar smokers. It has some interesting parallels to audio with Cigar Aficienado being similar to Stereophile as being the “trusted” source of information for buyers. But like the audio mag, they are funded by advertising dollars and reviews are highly suspect. The big difference, of course, is what you like is entirely subjective.

I’ll start the the discussion by saying I live in a US/Canada border town and do get an occasional Cuban cigar. They are quite good, erratic, and extremely expensive often around $40USD each or more. In many cases no better than a $6 Nicaraguan or Dominican cigar. That said, at their best, a fun indulgence.

Currently, I’ve fallen for Dunbarton and Foundation cigars as my favorites. They will get no press in CA because their owners refuse to advertise but are subjectively highly regarded among cigar smokers.

Full Circle. One of the best critics of cigars is a guy named Phillip Kohn who played bass guitar for Curved Air in the 70s. He often has anecdotes about his life as a rock star in his cigar reviews and is one of the more entertaining reviewers of anything I’ve ever read.

What are you smoking?

I'm almost 70 years old and started smoking cigars in the eighties. Five or six Oud Kampen La Reina per day.

When I river fished for brown trout, rainbow trout and dollies I often smoked a cigar. The wind in my face, the fly circling a big huge back eddy and a cigar alone with my thoughts was a big thing for me back then. I was smoking Old Ports and Colts. Cheap and easy to get and not so fat as a big one they where a delight at the time. >@^_*@<

I’m also a fly fisherman. Pretty hardcore. If you ever want a reco for something more memorable than Old Ports I’d be happy to give you one. :) Tight lines.

I tied flies for 12 years and even made my own painted spoons for walleye fishing the Columbia River. Thanks for the possible recommendation in the future. :D
