England, ex EU but still European
Dusty Springfield

"All the hit records I had in England were found, produced, almost promoted by me," she told Rolling Stone magazine in 1973. "I never took any credit. It wasn't fashionable for women to have credit. Now it's very fashionable. But I did the whole bloody lot myself!"

Great sounding music!

I remember my mum telling me when she came on tv, I would stop what I was doing and just look and listen. Yes she was great.

Carla Bley...

discography...

Composer, Bandleader, Piano and Organ, hates to sing but did a little when necessary, Grog Kill Recording Studio in her Willow NY basement, and, Producer of many of her titles.

I can think of only one title, on CD, that is weirdly produced, European Tour, but a broad [email protected] schmoozez it out just fine. I have to wonder if the LP has the same problem, I'll have to ask Audio Buddy about that.

Oh, and she's still working and relevant (to me) at age 82.

A “new” kid on the block, Morten Lindberg (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morten_Lindberg_(sound_engineer)).

34 Grammy nominations (has anyone got more nominations ever?).

I heard a couple of his Atmos productions this week for the first time on a 7.1.4 setup. Breath taking. Pushing the limits of playback. Sound quality is way beyond stereo. His recordings are pristine sounding.

I really like Steves Albini work. Both as producer and record engineer. His influence on alternative scene is enormous. Every time when I pick an album produced by him I can be pretty sure that it will fit my taste. His records sound so raw yet faithfully while keeping high quality.

Fourplay.

Originally 4 artists, composers, musicians and producers- all of them. Still produced by themselves (Bob James exec).

Their smooth jazz albums are unbeaten in my opinion.

Rick Rubin would be among my top choices. He's one of the reason why Death Metal (by virtue of going for the sound he got for Slayer) sounds the way it does

He's definitely got an amazing and diverse CV/resume...
Everything from hip-hop with Def Jam, to Jonny Cash.
... By way of metal with Slayer etc.

Still think Blood Sugar Sex Magic is the best RHCP album by a long way too myself.

Realise that he is most famous for his production work with U2 etc, but if you haven't heard his own stuff, check out :

"For The Beauty If Winona" and "Acadie".

("Apollo" with Brian Eno is very good too.)

For a more niche producer, I'd go for Scott Burns or Dan Swanö.

Brian Eno (Bowie, Devo), Boris Blank (Yello), Dr. Dre, DJ Shadow,
Mark Ronson, Andrew Weatherall, Lee Scratch Perry and of course George Martin.

Manfred Eicher (ECM). Lots of albums with great music and outstanding sound quality. Just not mainstream though, except maybe for Keith Jarretts Köln Concert.
Agree. Most modern jazz on labels like ECM, ACT, Jazzland, Blue Note are very well produced.

One of the primary reasons I now listen to a lot more of it.
Reliably top notch sound quality!

In the electronic/ambient/techno genre, I rate Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans aka: Humanoid (Stakker), FSOL, Amorphous Androgynous et al highly.

Early pioneers of modern British electronica.

I wouldn't say there is a "best," but I do give props to Mark Knopfler and Neil Dorfsman for their work on Dire Straits' "Brothers in Arms". When that CD was released in 1985 it was, hands down, the best recording I had ever heard.
