An old classic, White Van Scam, but now a different product. A projector. There definitely seems to be something fishy going on with:

Could it be as lucrative a scam as the speakers were?

That's not very new. These projectors - and surround sound systems - have been all over my local Craigslist and OfferUp listings for at least ten years now.

When you say it, it sounds reasonable. Different types of scams are everywhere, of course, and why not try something that was proven to work a number of decades ago?

Speaking of scams. There are probably similar programs in your countries. In Sweden with 646 episodes, starting in 1987 we had the TV program: Plus

The program dealt with consumer rights and interspersed reports, where people felt they had been cheated by companies, with studio conversations where representatives of the designated companies were called to account. The program also featured product tests where factors such as price, function, content, taste and durability were evaluated and compared between a number of selected products from different brands.

Not new. White van scams have been doing projectors and speaker systems for 20+ years. My sympathy dwindles with every year of humanity having access to internet reviews.
