Which SpeakON connection type?

Agree.
When you use them with SpeakONs, do you remove the sleeve insert, so the screw directly contacts the ferrule?

No.

Why would one want to poke a depression in the ferrule instead of using a lever to press it onto the contact?

I've got banana plugs going on the other end, so may give them a thought there too. Not sure the banana design will allow much clamping force, though.
If it’s one of the ones with screws to hold the speaker wire, use ferrules if you have a decent crimp tool.
Are those silver or flashed copper? Good assortment, more than I'd need... Do you know of a good source?

Mine are tin plated. Mostly Knipex/Rennsteig, Phoenix Contact, or Elora brands, and labeled Made in Germany. I chose those because they were cheap on Amazon when I bought them and came in cool round containers. Some are like the ones @restorer-john posted, others have colored plastic insulating flanges at the flared end. I’ve also used some Morris (Taiwan) and Burndy (US) brand ones for 26AWG balanced lines into Phoenix blocks, because they were available in that size. They were just as good as the German ones. I suspect they’re all the same more or less.
