Thinking seriously about MEG Geithains, John at Sound-Link was kind enough to lend me a smaller pair and I heard the 901ks at KMR.
I would like a truly capable speaker which would also work in larger rooms or where the client prefers to sit further from them.
Geithain make a lot of models…
Frontrunners are the 811k and the 921k , partly because there is a small nod to WAF.
Genuinely I would like to hear your thought there are no 811ks in the U.K. but I imagine the MEGs are all going to sound pretty similar just SPLs and bass extension.
Thanks in advance
Keith

I agree, unfortunately the U.K. disti only has very ( unbelievably ) slim margins, no chance of hearing them , expensive purchase unseen and unheard doesn’t look like it is going to happen, shame.

A pair of 811ks rrp in a nice veneer, circa £34k
A pair of 921s £13500 I dont really see what they offer in terms of advantages over the 8Cs , less bass extension both cardioid one in the bass one in the midrange , when I compared the 8Cs to the 944ks the 8Cs were clearly more transparent.
The MEGs are ugly/beautiful I suppose.

The biggest difference is that the 921K is fully cardioid and more of constant directivity (wider on the upper part) while the 8c is an increasing directivity design so they also sound different in typical rooms. I personally prefer the 921K to many loudspeakers, even more as a "plug & play" solution due to the cardioid bass.

The 921 indeed all the MEG designs have cardioid through the bass but not into the midrange, when I compared the 944k to the 8Cs you could just hear ‘more’ through the Dutch&Dutch, and the Megs had this boxy colouration which Phil Ward mentions in the SoundonSound review.

The 901 is a thirty odd year old design.

901K and 921K are cardioid also in the midrange having a mid driver open to the back with some damping material to reduce the flow velocity.

for in your store?

i would go 901k1’s and ask for 801 front plate finish. i remember i could do a lot of customization when i ordered mine (rl944k1’s).

you can look up the listening distance per model on their site. 901 is midfield; 2-4m or something like that.. you want to use them within specced listening distance range:

944 is nearfield. use it as such and be amazed i would say. imo there are not many (if any) nearfields in this level. and i have used and own(ed) quite some..

geithain shows listening distances on their website. within those conditions they are ideal. outside you can use them but they are not ideal.

Do you perceive a subjective difference with coaxial/point source designs and differences in directivity? As in Kef, Genelec ones compared to 8c etc?
This is the main reason I subjectively prefer the MEG designs and some of your customers might as well?

above 250 does not radiate backwards and below 30hz the output drops, so effectively the output is a perfect cardioid, but if you want to be ‘right’ then enjoy it!
