Hi everyone,

I’m considering upgrading from my old setup and I want to go with active speakers to simplify things. I have a Dual MTR-40 turntable (which has a built-in phono stage), so I can connect directly to active speakers without needing an external pre-phono.

Here are some models I’m looking at:
  • Edifier S1000MKII
  • Edifier S2000MKII
  • Edifier S3000PRO
I’d love to hear from people who have experience with at least one of these models (or similar active speakers):

Which of the three Edifier models do you think is “best” for my Dual MTR-40 setup, given I listen to classic rock, prog, blues, etc., in a modest-sized room?
  1. Are there other active speaker models in a similar price range you’d recommend instead?
  2. Would any of those speakers be sufficient alone, or would I benefit from adding a subwoofer?
  3. What should I look for when auditioning active speakers (in terms of bass response, clarity, staging) so I choose wisely?
Thanks in advance, I appreciate all your input!

Hi, and welcome
I'll start with a few questions if you don't mind :)

Why Edifiers? Are you open to other brands? Active is a sensible choice BTW
Budget? That's quite a range.

What's your set-up like: how far will you sit and what's the spacing between speakers? How loud do you listen?

Other brands to look at are; Kali, JBL or higher end stuff like Neumann or Genelec (depending on budget)

What to look for?: good measurements - if you can't find any objective reviews then probably best to avoid them. Edifier MR5 measure well, for example.

After that, check the features and inputs you want.
After that, try to listen to a pair and just see what you think (no noise when there's no music)

Take a look at some reviews here, read the comments, get a feel for the place

I won't attempt a recommendation... If possible I'd recommend listening for yourself.

The source doesn't really matter. You generally want the best speakers that are within your budget whether you are listening to "scratchy old vinyl" :P or clean digital.

given I listen to classic rock, prog, blues, etc.,
Again, that doesn't matter too much as long as you can get accurate reproduction of whatever you're listening to. But if you like hip-hop with lots of "extra" bass you might want to focus on bass response, etc.

Would any of those speakers be sufficient alone, or would I benefit from adding a subwoofer?
Possibly, depending on how much bass you want. You aren't going to get "realistic" bass you can feel in your body from a 5" or 6" woofer. And a subwoofer gives you an additional way of adjusting the bass. But if can sometimes be tricky to integrate a subwoofer without an Audio Video Receiver (or something) with a built-in crossover and subwoofer output. Some subs have line-level pass-through with a crossover.

There are "full range" speakers that don't need a subwoofer. (Home theater generally requires a separate subwoofer or you lose the separate "point one" LFE channel.)

What should I look for when auditioning active speakers (in terms of bass response, clarity, staging) so I choose wisely?
Speakers are mostly about frequency response. "Clarity" isn't really defined and "soundstage" mostly depends on the recording, room acoustics, and your brain since it's an illusion with the sound actually coming from a pair of speakers.
