Perusing through Sterephile's RTLF 2024, I found a few albums that I like. Problem is, most of them sound terrible because they're squashed to death with dynamic compression. If they're original recordings, there's nothing I can do about it. But some of them are reissues of original recordings that were not squashed. Qobuz sometimes has several versions of albums, I can listen to them and find the non-squashed original. But sometimes they don't.
So I thought it would be useful to compile a master list of places to find original recordings. I'll start it with only 3 that I know of:
1. eBay
I have had success here, especially when contacting sellers to confirm what year a CD was made (original? reissued? remastered?)
2. Discogs
Great selection and details, but prices are high.
3. Amazon
Selection and pricing is highly variable. Sellers usually don't say what version a CD is, and if you ask they often don't even know how to find out.
Any others?
Note: If ASR already has a thread about this, we can delete or merge this. I searched and didn't find anything.
