Interested to hear how often and recently folks have attended live music events; what type of music, was the listening experience positive or disappointing and why (quality of musicians, venue acoustics, live sound PA etc)

16 years ago - Steely Dan. Couldn't fault it in any respect and the band clearly enjoyed it too.

Had front row centre seat, Donald Fagen sat about ten feet away. (That did cost quite a lot though).

Got into them back in 1990 when they'd been over for a decade, never thought then that I would ever see them live but have actually seen them twice.

Supposed to be going to see a ZZ Top cover band this evening, friend's outfit, so I'll vote after that when there's a category I can vote in ;)

Only live music I bother with is classical/instrumental stuff at the Jack Singer Concert Hall. Relatively cheap with excellent sound.

Festivals and stadiums sound worse than my own setup and are expensive, so hard pass. Bar gigs occasionally sound good, but I am there to drink, not do critical listening.

A local chamber orchestra last evening at a local church, which was fully acoustic, and Arctic Monkey’s two days ago at a the city’s cricket ground (25,000 capacity) which was fully amplified. This weekend I will be at the Isle of Weight Festival, which is a short boat ride away :) I can’t wait to see Blondie, Manic Street Preachers and Robbie Williams…

Thank you. This will be my first time back to the Festival since 1970 when it was the last time Hendrix played.

I have Steve Gadd with the Hemmer, Blicher, Gadd band in Nottingham and Paul Carrack at the Royal Albert Hall in September. Hope to find some smaller jazz gigs in between

Paul Carrack is the best male speaker since Frankie!

Earlier today, my wife was playing the piano. :)

Otherwise, I prefer to go to concerts in a small setting, not to the big, famous houses where the masses go. I haven't listened to pop and jazz for a long time (with exceptions) but almost only classical and contemporary classic and have already reported about some live concerts in the ASR e.g. recently in this thread:

Classical guitar society meeting two weeks ago. Some excellent amateur and professional players.

Great live and free & high-quality classical music and jazz in Des Moines during the summer...very occasionally go to larger concerts in Des Moines or Omaha. We have a great local jazz/cabaret venue, Noce, and a smaller concert venue with a widely-varied calendar, Hoyt Sherman Place. Favorite past larger events are: Randy Newman, Indigo Girls, The Secret Sisters (when they were in their early years) and Steely Dan in Omaha (their last year before Fagan passed away).

We have a large summer music festival in early July, 80/35, which occasionally has acts I'm interested in, but it's usually 95+ degrees and large crowds aren't my thing...I almost went last year because Japanese Breakfast was playing...

The last concert we saw was... Air Supply at the Paramount in Denver. Not my thing, but the wife loves them. I will admit they put on a great show, though. Very good sound, but the Paramount always has good sound.

Heading to San Diego for the week, today in fact, and we have tickets to see CAKE there next week. That one I'm looking forward to.

I saw Pat Metheny last weekend (The National, Richmond, VA) and I hate to say it but I was really disappointed: the mix was poor (I thought his guitars sounded muddy); the drummer, though really talented, overwhelmed everything; his keyboardest seemed to be playing way over his head.

By comparison, I saw YES at this converted 1920s movie theatre 10 years ago and it was the best YES concert I’d ever seen, so I know the poor mix was no fault of the venue’s PA.

Worst of all, Metheny had virtually no interaction with his audience. He introduced the other musicians twice and that’s the absolute extent of his audience interaction. Very weird.

For a jazz guitarist with a legendary reputation, the Metheny show felt to me like a very amateur production. Disappointing.

I attend about 1 concert a month at our local opera house (concert, opera, ballet). Before the pandemic maybe 3-4 rock/jazz blues concerts and 1 or 2 days at a local open air festival.
