Hospitals can clean used masks

[ The filter effect of the material is decisive for this. After steam sterilization at 121 degrees Celsius, according to the KAV, the FFAV2 masks without valve did not show a reduced, but even a slightly improved filter effect of the material.

The FFP2 mask with valve had a slightly reduced retention capacity after sterilization, which was classified by experts as harmless, however.

According to experts, FFP3 masks can at least be used a second time as FFP2 masks due to the slightly reduced filter effect... ]

To more knowledgeable folks here, will one vaccine fix them all?

maybe - depends on what each mutation or combination does in terms of the structure of the virus

LINK to update on evaluating the effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine.

Most worthless news story of the day, and there's a lot of competition!

It is not worthless but one of many expressions of scepticism by the scientific community. The experts in my university also say there is no serous scientific indication that it would work. No reason not to try they say but please do not suggest that we are on the verge of a breakthrough. I would prefer to see US communication controlled by Tony Fauci who actually knows what he is talking about. This is science.

Except in three autonomous regions (Euskadi, Catalonia, and Navarra since months ago), in the rest of the country the Guardia Civil is in charge of monitoring vehicle traffic, with a specialized body unit for it.

- The End -

As for the story about different variants. The same showed up in the large systematic test of a sample in the south of the Netherlands. There were clearly many different strains pointing to many different sources of infection. Hence contact tracing was stoped in this region.

Statistically insignificant study, done at an institution several levels down from first rank, controlled by a government with a track record of lies and cover ups, and reported with a political slant.

I'll go with "worthless."

Theoretically, it should be possible to test the antiviral effect of drugs rather quickly. You need a very precise quantitative PCR system. With few patients you can check viral loads before and frequently after taking the testing drug. This has been done for other viral diseases (like HCV and HIV) before*. It doesn't have to be double blind as the PCR machine doesn't care what blood (or other tissue) you test. What you can't know is if viral eradication also reduces autoimmune complications. For this you need larger trials.

There are also other complications. You don't know if viremia is stable over time in patients, if it varies a lot results can then be confusing. You also don't know if viremia varies by stage of disease, symptomatic versus asymptomatic, etc. But again, "sampling" corrects for these issues.

I am not sure how validated is the quantitative PCR of SARS-CoV-2. The study of viral kinetics is extremely important for the resolution of this disease.

* I have publications of this in HCV and HIV.

No more worthless than the "studies" that say it works - both are simply "weak" indicators of possibilities.

While I agree with not denying people the opportunity to self medicate with drugs or treatments that are approved for other conditions, I strongly oppose relying on such treatments and self-medications that interfere with the best known treatments.

And the worst is to try treatments with "chemicals" that are not actual "medicine" without consulting a real expert...

...the couple thought the drug compound Trump mentioned in a televised press conference was the same as the fish-tank cleaner they had in their home pantry. But the fish-tank cleaner is not the same as the prescription drug, and it shouldn’t be substituted as such. A man in Arizona recently died from ingesting it.

The two [chemicals] are not the same. Chloroquine, also known as chloroquine phosphate, is used in anti-malarial drugs available in the U.S. by prescription only, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A variant, hydroxychloroquine, is an arthritis medicine that can also prevent malaria. There are studies underway to [determine] whether that drug, and a variant called hydroxychloroquine, could combat the coronavirus.

@CtheArgie - thanks for the link. At the bottom of the page is another LINK - to the StatNews "most popular" articles. It looks like a great resource, and I have bookmarked it.

The Tip of the Iceberg: Virologist David Ho (BS '74) Speaks About COVID-19
March 20, 2020

"I personally believe we will blunt this epidemic, but I think we wasted a good four to six weeks largely because of lack of testing and lack of a certain preparedness. But I think we could still make a difference and bring it under control with very harsh measures.

But again, are these measures sustainable? ...... But what are the measures that are effective and sustainable? That's a question we as a society have to deal with. We need to buy time so that gradually the population will have a degree of immunity.

Most importantly, we need to buy time to allow science to deliver solutions."

Coronavirus: Catalunya calls for total confinement for Conca d'Òdena for 15 days

[ The Govern had decreed perimeter confinement (phase one) for the Conca d'Adena on 13 March. Thirteen days later, cases of contagion and deaths in Igualada have not stopped growing. This confinement is now expanded: all services will stand, except basic ones. It will affect, above all, the field of work, as it limits the mobility of the population within the municipalities of the Conca d'Òdena. Only those who do so can work in essential services.

In Igualada, according to figures yesterday, there are 306 positive cases, of which 140 are healthcare professionals. In this municipality 41 people have been killed since the onset of the pandemic. Catalonia has 6.9 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants; Madrid, 27; Lombardy, 41; and Igualada, 63.1 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. ]

The peak in Catalonia is expected in a month, April 24-28 (Generalitat de Catalunya dossier).

Un informe dice que Catalunya podría alcanzar el pico el 24 o el 28 de abril

BTW, responsible for ensuring confinement is the regional police (Mossos d'Esquadra), along with the local. Something they are not doing well.

That's what they Raoult did in his first paper if I remember well. It showed viral load decreasing quickly with his protocol.

For all patients, 500 µL of the liquid collected from the nasopharyngeal swab were passed through 0.22-µm pore sized centrifugal filter (Merck millipore, Darmstadt, Germany), then were inoculated in wells of 96-well culture microplates, of which 4 wells contained Vero E6 cells (ATCC CRL-1586) in Minimum Essential Medium culture medium with 4% fetal calf serum and 1% glutamine. After centrifigation at 4,000 g, microplates were incubated at 37°C. Plates were observed daily for evidence of cytopathogenic effect. Presumptive detection of virus in supernatant was done using SU5000 SEM (Hitachi) then confirmed by specific RTPCR. Outcome The primary endpoint was virological clearance at day-6 post-inclusion. Secondary outcomes were virological clearance overtime during the study period, clinical follow-up (body temperature, respiratory rate, long of stay at hospital and mortality), and occurrence of sideeffects.

[ While the two Chinese-supplied aircraft that the Madrid Community announced it had acquired days ago did not arrive in Barajas, the region's hospitals - the most hit by the Covid-19 crisis - are increasingly suffering more precarious conditions. Despair begins to take hold of all health workers because of a lack of resources to protect themselves in their daily activity. Garbage bags in place of waterproof gowns, diving goggles purchased from Decathlon, plastics to cover the feet, hotel shower caps and even disposable raincoats in some hospitals such as La Princesa, Infanta Sofia or La Paz... ]

[ "It's a sam who can. Every day we manage with what's there," the health workers lament. Individual protective equipment (EPIs) have become almost a privilege. Only a few units are available and in which hospital plants. The rest improvise every day. A lot of The Princess's health staff arrived at eight o'clock on Wednesday to start their shift and came across the novelty of the day: they had to wear raincoats because there were no robes available. Doctors, nurses, and assistants passed the rooms and cared for patients in this short-sleeved clothing that didn't even cover their arms and body completely... ]

Again, criminal negligence.

It's a good thing that you're not uselessly obsessive about this.
