What would you suggest from a $300–500 dedicated stereo power amplifier? And why?

I'm searching for a stereo/mono amplifier in the $300–500 range.

Before finalizing the feature set, I'd like to get feedback from experienced users here.

The basic needs are:
  • maybe 200 W/ch into 4Ω
  • Balanced XLR input
  • High measured performance
  • Subwoofer output + HPF
  • Optional bass/treble control
  • Display / VU visualization
  • No DAC, Bluetooth or streaming

I'm particularly interested in technical objections and real-world use cases rather than simply whether the specification looks attractive.

Power? Tube or SS? Gain? Brand? Ready to use, kit or DIY? Seems to me to be a too vague question.

For new, you might have to up your spend to get all that. If you can live with 100 wpc there should be options.

You say "power amp" in the title, but then talk features of an integrated amp - which is it?

Well, it's going to be Class-D or course.
What's wrong a with a Fosi or similar?

For the quoted budget don't worry about XLR or displays.

At $300–500 for a dedicated power amp, class-D is the only sensible frame. The value anchors are TPA3255-based units (Fosi V3 / 3e Audio A7) around $150–300, and Hypex-based builds (Buckeye/Audiophonics) at the top of your range — the Hypex jump buys lower measured noise and switchable gain, but for typical home speakers the TPA3255 will be audibly indistinguishable. Decide the practical features first: input sensitivity/gain matching against whatever preamp or source feeds it, a 12V trigger if the amp is tucked away, and whether you genuinely need balanced XLR (at this price, usually not). If your loads are easy and levels moderate, spend near the bottom of your range and put the rest toward speakers or a sub.

Buckeye has been developing an integrated amp - Hypex-based, I think - for a long while, but it's still not out. My impression was that it was going to cost about double your budget, though.

Would suggest your peruse current amp / preamp offerings from Aiyima, FOSI and SMSL - you might have to compromise on some of your specs, but you can get close.
