Dumb question I know … but looking at various grilles covering speakers drivers made up of cloth and struts of plastic of various complexity and density
How detrimental this “ cover “ will be to the woofer part of a 4329 p
The emergence of unnecessary resonances is the first thing that comes to mind at certain frequencies when using wooden grilles in front of the speaker.
I’m sure it’s not as good as without
But the grille on the 4329p is a grid of plastic squares about and inch each
Are we talking disaster or not optimal here ?
It might IMHO at least rattle a bit. Which doesn't have to be audible, but...
That's why many old speakers had only a frame with rubber supports and a nylon fabric.
Or, a sturdy "shield" like the Canton Plus C sub (from the last Millennium).
A similar solution is on my Neumann monitors - perforated steel "clamps":
The decor is really on point in that room so I get the need for this.
As for the acoustic effects there's going to be a little diffraction around xover frequencies but probably not enough restriction of airflow to have much effect below that. I think if you took a measurement you'd expect to see some new little ripples in the FR between 1-3khz which is not ideal but probably not a big deal either
I gathered that , but I really expected the woofer cover would have a meaningful effect , it probably does but not for casual listening , I can’t see myself removing the cover often
