Interesting line up there, sounds like a fun roster of speakers. (And it's interesting seeing others here who have more than one set of speakers).
At one point I was just hoarding too many speakers. I'm going to lay out the models of speakers I had at one time in the house, before I came to my senses (and needed money) and sold most of them. As usual, as I enjoy gear photos and I think others do too, I'll illustrate my nutty journey. These are only a handful of the speakers I've actually owned. Rather, they are just the ones I happened to own all at once, and it was great fun comparing all of them in my room...
Thiel's flagship 3.7:
Though they were probably the best overall speaker I ever had in my room, they were too large aesthetically and ergonomically, so I grabbed a pair of their follow up speaker, the CS 2.7, which used the same "flat corrugated" coax mids, but was a slightly smaller floor stander. I had them both at the same time for about a year at least trying to figure out which one I'd keep. Ultimately I kept the 2.7s as they gave me enough of the 3.7s in a smaller form.
Thiel CS 2.7:
At some point I also had a gorgeous rosewood pair of Harbeth Super HL5+ speakers that I loved. (Was deciding whether to replace my big Thiel 3.7s with the smaller Thiels or the Harbeths, and decided I liked the Thiels better overall).
Harbeth Super HL5+ (my pair)
:
At the same time I also had the
MBL 121 Radialstrahler omnis (this is my actual pair, a photo from when I was selling them):
618 × 825
I also had the old Waveform Mach MC monitors - some audiophiles may recognize these as basically the top of the Waveform Mach 17 speakers. Those "eggs" were incredibly inert and designed for smooth dispersion and MAN did they disappear and image like mad! (My pair):
I also had, and still own, a pair of
Spendor S 3/5 classic monitors in a beautiful Bird's Eye Maple finish, like this pair:
And then there are my
Hales Transcendence 1 stand mount speakers. Paul Hales was a fantastic speaker designer, his speakers sound so smooth on or off axis, with wonderful timbral purity for voices and instruments. I owned the floor standing Hales Transcendence 5s but sold them to a friend and couldn't get the sound out of my head so I bought these monitors, which were for quite a while my 2 channel monitors.:
But when I decided to turn my listening room in to a projection-based home theater (and 2 channel room) I used the Hales T1s as my L/R and added the spectacular (and rare as hens teeth)
Hales Transcendence Cinema center channel. The thing is a beast! But the match with the T1s is made in heaven. And I found I didn't even need a sub (not mine) (mine is in the same Pau Ferro finish as the one standing up on it's end):
Since I'd gotten in to home theater big time my 2 channel lust waned a bit, so I was using the Hales T1 monitors still as my 2 channel listening as well. The T1s were near the room corner beside the projection screen for home theater duty, but when I wanted to listen to 2 channel I'd pull them out in to the room to the "listening triangle" and hook them up to the alternatve speaker wires that led back to my tube amplification. Yeah, nutty audiophile stuff.
Finally, while having all those in the house I also had - and still own - one of my favourite all time speakers, the cheapo
Thiel 02 speakers, circa late 70's/early 80s. They were my wife's speakers when I met her, picked out for her long ago by her audiophile dad and brother. I can't get rid of these, and still throw them in to my system because they have this special combo of smoothness, timbral "rightness" and palpability. Every time I put them in I question whether I need anything more (not my pair):
I still miss the MBL and the Waveform speakers! But certainly love my current Joseph Audio speakers. I get to switch them up with the Thiel 2.7s as I want, or throw in the Spendors or the old Thiel 02s. That's enough for me to experience the variety I enjoy at this point.
