For lossy: Lame MP3 (HQ) 320 CBR or VBR-0 since I can enjoy music in this format equally well as in FLAC or WAV and allows me to put double or 3 times as much songs on a player with limited memory space.
Checks for updates now and then but haven't seen any updates for a long time already.
My 'better quality' recordings are in lossless format.

dBpoweramp high rate MP3 and AAC. Love that software and the way it integrates with Windows.

For portable useage - Ogg Vorbis 320. Good balance between quality sound in a noisy environment and space saving over FLAC.

I mainly stick with Lame MP3 at V1(224kb/s VBR) since i can't tell.

AAC 320 ABR. I tested Opus (320kbps), Lame MP3 (320 CBR) and AAC in Foobar2000 (from WAV). The composition is Hush by Deep Purple. Tested with my ears and Modi3/Magni2 pair attached to PC Windows 10. AAC won. So m4a files for me.
Problem is - I can tell the difference in this particular song. It has heavy guitar distortions. You can choose any other song with similar heavy guitar distortions (Van Halen for example) - I just think those are the only songs which will push the codecs to their limits. Pop music and esp classical music are not that demanding.

With unlimited mobile plan, I just stream everything from Amazon with my phone which is MP3 over Bluetooth to my head unit in the car. Otherwise all lossless .flac files.

BTW, if the source is 24/96 (usually vinyl rip) -> Ogg Vorbis make 16/96 !

Lame 320 k MP3 in car and on phone, because my 20-year-old car stereo doesn't support anything else.

Why would you record vinyl ("rip" usually means copying digital data) in 24/96? All you need is 16/48 (and even that is ample).

Vorbis q5 here. Opus is better, but more battery intensive, at least without SIMD, and its Replaygain spec is a massive mess (no peak and strange header/tag gain situation).

You'll regret your move.

Opus at 128kbps, and LAME -V 0 for anything that doesn't support Opus.

I don't know.

Whatever the Cable company ships their programming with.

The Ibiquity HDRadio codec.

Whatever YouTube uses.

For actual listening just regular old lossy CDs.

I have a lot of MPC (Musepack) from the old days.

Nowadays, only LAME -V3 for the phone. V3 mainly because it's much less prone to bitrate increase due to high frequency content related to the sfb21 issue.
