I don't know how you did it, but I've seen gear that used a neon bulb
Yep, a small gas discharge bulb, derated for long life (target was >= 5 years continuous duty). Basically what is inside of many illuminated mains switches, just a bit larger.
A problem with these is that you cannot use them for universal mains voltage.

Red is better. Also prefer red for displays. Better for the eyes in the dark.

I couldn't vote red in the poll because why would anyone want flashing red for standby?

If your equipment has another way to indicate that it is operating, you do not need an indicator light. For example: turntables, any amp that has a VU meter, any valve amplifier where the valves are visible, any preamp that has illuminated dials, any CD player that has an illuminated track indicator. Otherwise, I prefer separate colours to indicate on, standby, and off (no illumination when off). My subs are always on standby, and those bloody things require a pretty loud signal to turn them on. If I play violin music for 10 minutes, they go back on standby. The green/red indicator I installed on the sub is very helpful in that way.

Marky looks down, shuffling his feet...
I have... a... a... confession to make, he mumbles.
I... umm... like blue LEDs.

There! I said it! And I feel all right about that. Darn it, I'm me! and I like me!
