First of all, I really have low knowledge on music and sound. So, I really need help to find a pc speaker. I'm sorry if this question is weird but here is what I need. I want a PC speaker that is:

  • Compact, small size, bookshelf speaker
  • Active speaker for simplicity
  • Money is not an issue (no limit budget)
  • If it's expensive, it's because of its quality and sound! (I don't care about brand symbolism)
  • Sounds PERFECT for ballad, romantic, calm, or instrumental music (If the speaker has some specific setting for this, also can)
I hope someone knowledgable can help me. Thank you!

Genelec

Select the ones that match the size you want. For the smaller sizes you will also need the matching sub. (Applies to any speaker in the size you are looking for)

Job done.

Happy new year :)

I won't attempt a recommendation but some comments...

I'd recommend listening before buying something. It can be educational to go to an audio/video store and listen a variety of speakers just to hear what different speakers can sound like.

It's difficult to get "good sound" from a small speaker. For me an 8-inch woofer is usually the minimum. But size isn't everything and sometimes the bigger speaker isn't better. (But, "A kitten can't roar like a lion.")

Most "computer speakers" aren't that great. :(

There are lots of good active "studio monitors" in almost every size and every price range. (It's a "stretch" to call some of the little cheap ones "studio monitors".) Most most monitors don't have protective grills so they tend to have an "industrial" appearance. Monitors are generally sold where musical instruments and pro audio equipment are sold. The JBL 308 gets good reviews but I haven't heard it. And as antcollient said, almost anything from Genelec is well regarded.

Most hi-fi and home theater speakers are passive, except for subwoofers which are usually active.

Once you have a good speaker that can accurately reproduce the sound it doesn't matter what you're listening to. But with certain kinds of music, bass is more important, etc., so you may want to make different compromises.

There is no such thing as a speaker for "romantic calm" music. There's only more accurate and less accurate. The only recommendations you will get here (I hope!) are for "more accurate" speakers.

This is not to say that certain types of colorations may make music sound more "romantic" or "calm", for example some speakers with thick midrange coloration are said to sound "romantic", e.g. old Tannoys. Other speakers with rolled off top and bottom end are midrange heavy and this is praised as a virtue because it is "good with voices" (the reality is that it's no good for anything else).

It might be better if you decide what attributes of a speaker you might want to prioritize, and I see that you have already listed some. Bear in mind that smaller speakers means less bass extension and limited max SPL. Some people don't need a lot of max SPL (small listening room, nearfield listening) or much bass extension due to choice of music or other factors (e.g. sound leakage / bothering neighbours). If that is you, then the Genelecs which have already been recommended are a good choice.

Guys, you're bombarding the OP with TMI!

OP, I would just buy a pair of Neumann KH-120 and call it a day. Then, if you want to, you can learn about all that stuff that the others are trying to teach you while listening to beautiful music on a truly superb pair of speakers.

Are you concerned about appearance?

Yep. I think I will go for Genelec speaker! :) I didn't know anything about Genelec until today, which proves my significant lack of knowledge of the speaker world.. ^^" I just know brothers speaker, it's super old and its because my dad used to buy that when I was a kid :)

TQSM for the recommendation and many new infos that I've gained! You all are the best!

I think wider directivity speakers are more relaxing to listen to. The larger and more etheral soundstage as well as the additional reverberants adds to the effect.

I love genelec but they are not wide. You might consider an Adam 5SV.

I was in exact same boat as yours not too long ago. My Bose companion 2.1 died after 10 years and I decided to my audio game. Prior to that, my entire knowledge was that the sub plays bass and speakers play trebles. So I came out finding the best 2.1 setup as long as they can fit my desk (up to 8” wide for each speaker). Having gone through Genelec, Newmann, Adam Audio.. 2 way, 3 way, I realized each speaker has its own sound profile. So you either like it or you don’t. The only reference in audio is accuracy compared to the what the musicians intended. But I have to warn you that accurate speakers are boring, to me they have no soul. So what I would recommend is that, unless you want to dip your toe into altering the sound with DSP and PEQ, you may want to have a trip to the store and listening to each setup before pulling the trigger.

For me I ended up with a pair of Kali In-5, a SVS SB3000 and a MiniDSP Flex, then spend sometime finding my flat and house curve. It was quite a journey and I really enjoyed it.

by pc speaker do you mean desktop speakers? If yes then Adam D3V.

If you can use stands then that opens a world of possibilities. Depends on what you want honestly, do you like a wide soundstage or accurate placement of instruments? Because both are nice and immersive and both make me happy.

For a small speaker, it's tough to beat the Genelec 8331A. Add a matching/calibrated sub and you have an excellent sounding system. You might think you don't need a sub until you try one. Low end is what gives body to audio. A Genelec 7050/7350 or 7060/7360 sub would complete the package.

An expensive setup but since money is no object here, this is endgame.

Then the Genelec or Newman suggestions should be considered. Their appearance is a matter of taste, but their music reproductive abilities are awesome

(ahem) ... the name is German, and it's pronounced "Noy-mahn".

If you want cheap, go for Edifier. Got VGP award 2025, Edifier MR5. That’s more than enough.
