(Although on the Chinese vs Austrian front it's generally accepted that there is no difference in sound quality. To be honest to get to the real truth you'd have to measure probably something like 5-10 units of each of the two countries whilst each unit had fresh pads and then chart the average and range of differences - so not really gonna happen.)AKG K702/Q701 vs K7XX vs K712. There is a lot of confusion about the differences between these 'phones. It would be nice to see Chinese vs Austrian as well..
I remember seeing on solderdude's website (https://diyaudioheaven.wordpress.com/) that the bass mod adds distortion & it's better off to use software EQ instead of doing the bass mod. So I would think the same is likely to hold true for the Q701, probably better to use software EQ for the Q701 too.Would be nice to someday see measurements of the un-modified AKG Q701 vs the Q701 with bass mod.
That involves just taking off a small sticker on the back of the driver.
I know there is measurements of this using a K702.
I'm not convinced the Q701 and K702 measure exactly the same.
Even the tiny grill is a bit different, but probably wouldn't change the sound that much.
I was never a fan of the old K701/K702, but loved the Q701 even stock!
Apparently the bass mod adds lots of bass distortion for the K702, but i've been using my bass modded Q701 for years without any issues with it's sound at all.
FYI the bass modded Q701 with K712 pads sounds extremely bad. Don't EVER try that. It's just one big muffled mess.
It might be OK when it's stock.
BTW sort of unrelated, but has anyone ever taken measurements of the original Asgard 1?
That was my first and very worst experience with a full desktop amp back in the day.
Sounded bad with both the K702 and HD-650.
The Headroom Micro Amp was a huge upgrade from that. Now I've even side-graded from that to the Magni 3+
There some small improvements and it costs way less.
I think I have this one here....Massdrop X Sennheiser HD 58x
I second that!Something affordable from major manufacturers...

these are monsters if anyone is curious - i wanted a pair of ldac cans to test with my new phone and... for $70 down from $250 i was quite shocked by the overall quality.Plus, I have to give them kudos for the colorways they've been releasing in the middle price points (RP-HD605N-T / RP-HD805N-T):
