Refreshed my ancient HE-400 with cheapie AliExpress sheepskin pads, something they've never had.

The new pads were so affordable after coupon and coins, great bargain. Sound quality is better than with Dekoni Elite Velours, which they replace. More bass works for me, comfort is real luxurious. Can't believe my OG HE-400 still works and still sounding so good too. They're power hungry at times, so good thing I got the XLR cable, driven by a THX 789.

Planars:

• HiFiMan Sundara Closed - got these for really cheap on sale and took a chance on them. They sound better than what the online reviews led me to believe.
• HifiMan Edition XS - very good headphone especially when on sale.
• HiFiMan 400se - Needs a very powerful amp to drive properly and with a simple tape mod and mesh filter removal they sound nearly as good as the Edition XS. They are super affordable too!
• Fiio FT1 Pro - These are my favorite planars of the bunch. I just like the sound signature, comfort, and weight are good too. I got the second manufacturing run so no issues with build quality.

Dynamics:

• HD650 - love these - need a powerful amp to drive though. They just sound good with every type of music. Basically a safe choice for your first audiophile type of headphone. Soundstage is a little narrow, it's like your in the studio with the recording artist during a live recording.
• NAD HP50 - These closed backs sound like open backs with an excellent soundstage and very balanced sound. I still haven't heard a closed back under $500 till this day that can rival these in terms of an audiophile type sound. Super easy to drive too. Apple dongle is more than enough. Too bad they stopped making these. Grab them if you see them on sale used.
• ATH-R50x
• HD599 - fun and comfortable for casual listening. Pretty much an intro into this hobby rabbit hole for decent sounding headphones
• Grell OE1 - weird sounding for sure but I kept them just for that reason. Got them for cheap on Amazon for $67. you can still find them on Amazon. Cheaper than a tank of gas so why not Lol.

I had absolutely no idea NAD made headphones. I looked them up, and they certainly have a rather unconventional design. I'd be curious to hear how they sound one day.

I'd also like to hear FiiO's open-back headphones, as well as their closed-back model. I own one of FiiO's headphone amps, and I've been quite happy with it.

You need small ears for the NAD HP50, otherwise they won't fit inside. Good headphones though.

The stock earpads also tend to wear out over time but you can fight really good replacements online that have a bigger fit and come in various materials like velour, sheepskin, and stock pleather etc.... on brainwaves website. Yes, the frequency response is likely to change and it's hard to say by how much & where. I used to use these HP50 headphones and my ears fit inside the stock pads and they sound great with an Oratory EQ, changing the pads makes that EQ invalid for example.
