Dear fellow members,
I have a dilemma where I find it difficult to reach a decision. Above all, I understand this is a matter of taste but I'd like some advice or insight regardless.
Situation is as follow: I listen to a lot of music, mostly jazz and I own about 600 albums. I have a temporary subcription on Roon and lifetime Plex.
In the house there are four places I put on music: kitchen, living room, dining room and office.
I buy CD's (2nd hand) from long-dead or very rich artists, I buy albums via Bandcamp or new CD's from alive and not-yet-very-rich artists in order support them.
As a streaming service I use both Tidal and Spotify.
Spotify I use because most of my friends/colleagues use it, so whenever a playlist/new artists are sent it's done via spotify.
Tidal I use because it pays artists better and I like the discovery a little better.
I've tried Roon Arc but it seems to be rather battery intensive on my Samsung S23.
I use a VPN at all times so accessing ,my own files when I'm not home is easy (but through a VPN you can not use the regular Roon and listen on your own device btw).
That leads to the following conclusions/experiences/ideas:
1. Tidal needs to know what I listen to in order to discover relevant music, but if I use Plex (or Roon) for my owned albums then these listening sessions are not taken into account into the recommendations. If I were to use Tidal alone, the (purely psychological) joy of listening to your own, bought albums, goes away.
2. Roon can do it all (with Roon ARC) but is too battery intensive. Plus, it is just really really really (really) expensive which I don't like.
3. Using Tidal, Spotify and Plex (or Roon) varyingly leads to brain confusion. Keeping libraries in both Spotify and Tidal is a lot of hassle. You can use Spotify allone these days (they have a hifi tier), but I don't like that they pay artists that bad, especially the smaller artists.
Which leads to dilemma where I find it difficult to choose when to use what platform to be able to discover music, keep it a bit simple.
Has anyone been through the same dillema and found a smart approach to this?
Thanks for any helpful insights.
