What CD Player would you like to see tested?

The two I tested, Fiio and Moondrop, were not. So, I’m not keen on spending more money on these players unless the manufacturer communicates about that, to make me want to double check. But testing randomly at my expenses, no, I won’t

Yes, because your tests on Fiio and Moondrop I moved away from them to a Denon DCD900, also tested by you. I appreciate that.

Hi. Maybe the Shanling CR60 as it is a low form factor transport. I had one for a few days but it failed to play some cds as sometimes it paused sound and struggled to read data. I used the correct power supply. Some users also reported this behaviour. The cds played ok in a Denon DCD900 and Technics PG5. And maybe the SMSL PL150 as it is also a small form factor player but it is quite controversial about the true gapless palyback. It would be interesting to see if these little players are bit perfect as transports. I have an external DAC and look for minimum alteration of the sound. Thanks in advance

Unfortunately, I can only confirm the problems with the Shanling CR60.
I bought one at the beginning of the year and wanted to use it as a desktop and rip drive. Unfortunately, it couldn't read several CDs from my collection that were otherwise readable by all CD players.

I also experienced interference on several CDs during the last tracks, which became louder towards the end. I then experienced the same interference on the rips with the CR60.
Since the firmware update didn't improve the problem, I returned the drive. A second drive from a much later batch had the same problem.

I'm really looking forward to it.
Just like the 7355, the 7030 is a popular tuning item and is also very hyped. Unfortunately, this also makes the used price very high.
It will be interesting to see if and by how much the 7030 is actually better than the 7355.

I imported it directly from China myself - the matching tube amp followed a couple of months later - and still got the original packaging. Maybe there's some form of documentation in there? Unfortunately it is stuffed in a small storage cabinet behind a lot of other stuff, which I'd have to move first... I'll let you know as soon as I did that.

SMSL PL100 CD Player !!!

Let’s see if the SMSL prevents modification of digital output, as opposed to the Fiio and Moondrop portable players.

I took time today to publish the review of the Denon DCD-655.

Considering the price at which this player can be obtained, I can only recommend. On top of the good performances, you get one of the very best R2R conversion ever made, thanks to Denon for the additional selection process of the PCM1702 DACs (labelled "L" and previously undocumented). The co-linear conversion of this DAC should tickle every engineer even if it is obsolete today.

It is a perfect transport too, with a mega-fast drive we dream of.

All of this should be enough to generate a significant positive bias with you guys, when listening to it

Of course, I don’t have the budget to satisfy everyone’s needs, but if I can find, at a reasonable price, a CD player of your interest, I’ll go for it.

How about the Sony BDP-S1700U? It's technically a Blu-Ray player, but I am optimistic (enough so that I bought one) that it will be a great stand-in for a CD transport.

Key observations:

• It lacks a front-panel display and playback buttons; but has an extensive remote control, and a feature called Quick Start that auto-plays discs when inserted.
• It lacks smart features which means fewer remote control options and OSD options unrelated to CD playback.
• Due to its compact size it more closely resembles a desktop CD player than an A/V component.
• It doesn't have a DAC, so hopefully no compromises were made to the audio signal.

For future analysis with your lab setup and test CD, consider one of these Sony universal disc players: UHP-H1, UBP-X1000es, or UBP-X1100es. They share a similar or common analog output board, utilizing the AKM4452 DAC chip. It would be interesting to compare one of these 3 to older Sony CD players, and current players like the Denon DCD-900NE that had good results on your testing.

I could not find any of them locally, but I’ll keep an eye open.

In the meantime, I refreshed nearly completely the review of the Denon DCD-900NE with my latest tests. As my reference, it deserved it. I realized it’s even better than I remembered.

And… good news, the Onkyo C-7030 is back is stock at my preferred reseller, so I went for it. It will be interesting to see how it compares. I can’t wait!
