I'll throw a left field speaker, the Boston Acoustic Soundware. It ticks at least some of the boxes that make a good design. It's a coaxial speaker, with a 3/4" dome tweeter and 4-1/2" woofer in an acoustic suspension enclosure. It spec'ed at 90-20,000 Hz (±3dB) and as an acoustic suspension design benefit from corner mounting which improves the low end, although for serious listening you'd need a subwoofer.

It's still available new for Accessories4less for $69 each notwithstanding that Boston Acoustics seems to be a defunct brand. It's also easily found used. It's also gotten good reviews including one from LA Audio File which included a frequency response that I've included. It seems to have the 'BBC dip' no doubt due to its coaxial design. It's not what I'd call 'high end', but provides good sound in a variety of applications including home theater, as extension speakers and even outdoor speaker in sheltered locations.

In the interest of full disclosure I've 2 pairs, one pair with a Sony Minisystem in the kitchen and the other as part of a home theater system in the hobby room. 1587277524746.png1587278372664.png

I meant to put this in this thread instead of the DIY thread.

How about the ELAC DBR inwalls? It would be interesting to compare them to their box counterparts.

Would be cool, but that's another separate addon Amir would need to wrangle out of them.

Yamaha NS-6490. $130 pair..

Do these have a decent enough DI that you could take a DSP-408, the 6 80w amps of, say, a Marantz sr4300 ($40 thrift store), configure 2 active crossovers for each, PEQ all transducers' individually, and end up with some nice Poor Boy 'actives'?

Jamo S803? Currently on sale for under $150/pair.

$150/pair is the sucker price. The 5 channel bundle with 2x 803's, 2x 801's, and 81 center is only $199, and has been for many months. No idea how good they are spinorama wise, but IIRC JoeNTell measured a significant treble lift incline from 1-2kHz to 20kHz. I don't think these are going to be BS22 killers, but who knows, maybe with EQ or tone controls they could be.

Thanks for that. I ordered this package.

It's not cheap but the Gershman Studio II have been making some buzz on youtube.

I would love to see measurements of them and I have no idea if someone donated one of them like has been done for the Buchardt S400 or other speakers that have had a lot of buzz/hype.

I'd love to see the RSL CG3 ($135) or the CG5 ($350) bookshelf speakers. I've heard great things about their 10s subwoofer and want to know if their bookshelfs are up to snuff.
