'Saiyin' 3-way, passive, 5.25 inch bookshelf loudspeaker - currently selling for $99.99 a pair at Amazon USA.

Amazon USA offers a variety of passive and active loudspeakers from Saiyin for $99.99 a pair or less.

I’d love to see the Adam A7V, A77H or A8H, since they are popular and lower cost alternatives to the Genelec and Neumann monitors usually recommended here. Not w/i the budget though.

I am thinking it may make sense to buy a few budget but popular speakers to test. Or alternatively members buying and donating them to be tested. :)

So what is "in" these days as far as budget speakers? I am thinking under $200 for a pair.

It has been somewhat reassuring for me, when Adam Audio speakers have been tested on ASR, to see that they are generally quite close to Adam Audio's own published measurement data.

Ascend audio’s htm 200se2. Would be interesting to see how the cheapest klippel tuned/made speaker is especially with the unusually wide asymmetric directivity.

Another vote for the Ascend Acoustics HTM-200SE2 Loudspeaker - available singly for $208 or $368/pair plus shipping.

It may measure to be a performant option as a center channel or mini-monitor,

A review would signal ASR's support of loudspeaker manufacturers using a Klippel NFS to 'optimize' the design their products.

Let's measure a sample to see just how much optimization a member can obtain at these prices. :)

We've got a pretty good idea of the optimisation already as Ascend publish the measurements from their Klippel NFS on their product pages under the Measurements tab:

I think the most interesting reason for Amir to review these speakers is to see what audible affect the compromises made with these speakers have. They are sealed, and from what I understand are one of the few real acoustic suspension speakers out there. The directivity is also unusual and there is a large DI dip. They are also very affordable and seem like they are tremendous VFM. Ascend’s charts do provide all the technical information we could want but I think the subjective analaysis from an informed person is the real value in a review. I hope @AscendDF can get a pair to Amir.

It's one of the few times, though, that the measurement suite used seems to have missed something badly.

We have a few sets of the A77H and A8H at my day job, basically nobody likes them. They're flabby sounding, lack in perceived dynamics, and the mids get harsh at very moderate levels.

I haven't the foggiest what is causing this but I'd like to see a deeper dive on them, either by Erin or Amir.

The directivity plots of those 2 models aren't really great and also the max SPL plots show a dip around 1 kHz (p where our hearing is most sensitive which could possibly and partially explain your experiences:
Would also though like to see a full spinorama and multitone distortion measurement of them.

It would be great if Amir did it, since he has reviewed the KH150. Seems like that's the clear point of comparison, and the idea that one German company's 6.5 inch two-way is substantially better than another German company's 8 inch three-way at a comparable price point just boggles my mind. The Adam has a longer warranty too.

Harmonic distortion measurements show no particular issues around 1 kHz on the A8H, so the lower max SPL there is probably the speaker's limiter, which should be less intrusive with music than with sine bursts.

Both are obviously measured under free field or free field-like conditions, and a lot of the measurements are the same, so you can already compare them.

What does the country have to do with it?

I was thinking about the two companies being in the same industrial ecosystem at a relatively high level of expertise, if that makes sense. But yeah, I didn't mean to suggest that just being from a given country has much relevance.

Just the aesthetics looks so much better than previous 2 gens with awful scratch magnet glossy plastic.
But now, this hole has appeared on the front baffle.
