How to improve Radiohead

Thank you, I'll look for that.

Here's a link to a version of it with some other Gong performances attached. Not the best quality. But you get the idea ...

It's interesting to compare and contrast Gong with Magma.

Well Gong were one of the few prog bands who could get seriously funky and always fun. Magma were rarely funky and fun is not an adjective I would associate with them. Much as I love a lot of Magma's music there is always that faint (and occasionally quite strong) whiff of totalitarianism. Planet Kobaïa and Planet Gong obviously had very different political systems ... ;-)

I find the self-conscious goofiness and clowning annoying and distracting

I know what you mean. It doesn't bother me with Gong so much – perhaps because they managed to retain some Gallic chique and Daevid Allen truly inhabits that world – but I can't abide Zappa's peurile posturing. I was happily introduced to Camembert Electrique at a very young and impresssionable age, so that may have something to do with it. That whole world of what could be called English whimsy which I suppose began with Sgt. Pepper through Piper at the Gates of Dawn, Ogden's Nut Gone Flake etc. can get a bit cloying. I very much understand that world, being weaned on Alice in Wonderland, Edward Lear, Beatrix Potter etc. (in original Victorian and Edwardian editions) but it does become tiresome. They were different times. That said I do still love Bike ...
