A rather poignant listen, sad… ….but joyful….…….but sad…..
For anyone with knowledge of the best club in the world- SubClub Glasgow and JD Twitch/JG Wilkes (Optimo)
The Whole Of The Moon is a classic. It’s a song about awe and hope and love for the people who show us the best of this often broken world, the blessed few who show the way and introduce us to things and thoughts.
Keith McIvor aka JD Twitch of Optimo was one of those people, and this version of the track - electronic, euphoric, open-hearted - was made by some members of the broader Optimo community after his terminal brain cancer diagnosis in 2025.
The task of making a version that could’ve been heard on the dance floor at Planet Peach, Mas, or the Sub Club on a Sunday night or Monday morning brought them together across oceans, an act of joy amidst so much loss.
It was never intended to be released, but as it made its way to friends and others, it also felt wrong not to. Its sentiment is universal and applies to so many incredible people in music and beyond that are sadly missed.
So here is the Watergirls’ first and last track, presented as a limited white label with some particularly lethal mixes from Sean Johnston of Hardway Bros and A Love From Outer Space. We’re giving all the profits to charity.
It’s meant to be played out. It’s meant to make two friends hug and sing into each other’s faces. It’s for Keith and for everyone like him.

Only complaint is that the sax isn't quite present enough, sounds too restrained in the back. Boney James has such a great rich sound!

I've got this pair so darned bad - a foretaste of Vol III - even through a closed door...
That's pretty good. Always love me some Gong - although there hasn't been any original members in the band for over decade since Daevid Allen ascended to Planet Gong.
AFAIK Didier Malherbe and Hillage are both still alive but they haven't had anything to do with Gong for a while.
I love this clip of Gong in their heyday: Never Glid Before from a 1973 French TV documentary. The full documentary is priceless and well worth a watch.

Master Builder is the best! There are a few interesting examples of it on YT.
Radio Gnome Invisible wasn't in my childhood or adolescence and didn't become an anchor for me. like a lot of so-called "Canterbury scene", is a mixed bag for me because while the music is right in the center of what I've always loved most to this day and the musicians are great I find the self-conscious goofiness and clowning annoying and distracting. After a while my tolerance runs out and I put it off.
There's a similar problem with other bands. For example, Scream Thy Last Scream is in many ways really cool but Syd's vocal performance is not helping me. And I don't want to listen to The Gnome or Bike at all. Interstellar and theother vehicles for psych improv rockouts, otoh, any day.
