What advice you wish you could have given to your younger self or someone new to this hobby?

I lived in the UK through that period. I guessed Linn was likely one of them. I didn't have much to do with audiophile cos I didn't have much money.

Linn was a topic in our podcast episode about The Blue Nile first album, in which we also discussed the Rekursiv processor.
Hearing four songs from the first Blue Nile album via 30IPS half inch master tape (ATR 102 I think the machine was) some months before official release, reminded me again of the huge gap between vinyl and master recording - forgotten soon after until a few years later, when another comparison of similar master on same machine, watching and then playing an acetate cut while I was watching and comparing this to the 12" single and then the LP, nearly put me off vinyl for life!!! This after so many years selling and setting up LP12 decks with a variety of arms and pickups..

1) Buy only to impress yourself, not others. It's your money, not theirs'. 2) Never, ever spend a yards' worth of money to get three inches worth of improvement. Once you go down that rabbit hole, there's no coming back.

I always got a kick out of when people caught their first glimpse of my Maggie 1.7s. "What the hell are those?" was a common question.

I'm happy to know that you like the Magnepans -- but please, tell me you have a subwoofer!

I spent way too much on box swapping amp, source and cables over speakers and room and listening to people tell me it was impossible to get good bass with small - mid sized speakers.

Best investments for me have been:

Carpet over wood floors
Random shaped over square listening room
Learning to DIY speakers
Waiting for digital tech to mature rather than buying way out of problem
Carpets are repository of bugs and dirt!
Rectangular rooms are usually more predictable!

Linn make some good speakers at least

I owned Linn Nexus with the kustone stand. Shit speakers. Who do you work for? They all suck.
I don't work for anyone. To me Linn Katan sound good and they are one of the budget options I would recommend in the $200-400 range on Ebay.

No one serious about good audio will spend $200-400 on speakers. I spent more on lunch.

A big proportion of audiophiles can only afford around that much for speakers. Just look at the largest audiophile spaces on the internet like Reddit. Budgetaudiophile is one of the bigger communities. The most common questions are usually around that price range.

The bestselling Wharfedale speakers are probably the Diamond 12.1 at around $300 new.

I'd suggest a person who is is "serious about audio" spends what they can afford in pursuit of their hobby. Whether that is £20000 or £200 .

The best selling car in the US is the ford f-series. I drive a pagani utopia.

Fuck around with shit cars. There is a difference.

Depend about your budget and if you are able to build a speaker your self, you could build a great two way with that money! "good audio" is many times about lots of bling bling for the looks, status and profit. Not so much the sound as priority..

The Katan, like many of their speakers old and newer - even those with the 'array' of mid and tweeter domes it seems, has a deep suckout where our ears are most sensitive. Not unpleasant, but it does give a very 'dry and laid back' kind of tone, the tweeter thankfully not set so high as to tinkle too much. This from a thread here. The Rega Aya model, also has this suckout, but not the lift in the upper hundreds region and without the tweeter being set so high.
