Wharfedale Linton 85th Anniversary speaker review & measurements by Erin's Audio Corner

As can be seen from the tests of these two models (SP8 & SP10), the SP8 has a much better response in the high, i.e. much lower (the difference is approximately -3db from 5kHz) and therefore has less sibilants than the larger version of the SP10.

The pipes are hollow so I filled them with quartz sand.

I had the Lintons for almost 2 years, so I replaced them with the Mofi SP8 at the beginning of this year, so I know how they sound and what they can do. I also have the REl T9i, but I never turned it on with the Lintons because I had enough bass in 25m2 (unlike the Mofi, which comes in handy with the REL).

Hasn't one of these (SP10?) had a crossover revision recently? I'm sure I watched a video showing the crossovers being replaced...

Forgive my tattered old dealer hat being put on yet again, but the speakers you have behind (Lintons plus others in the corners, or are these some kind of wave trap?), may well have a deleterious effect on the perceived 'precision' and bass quality of the main pair playing. Apologies, been here so many times and I can't help passing it on - and it's not just a psychoacoustic thing to those of us who were there at the time ;)

That's an old picture, Lintons were sold in the meantime so now there's nothing behind Mofi. Those in the corners are DIY bass traps.
The speakers are 1m from the front wall and 2.20m between them.

Are those regular linton stands with the wood part removed ?
Sorry, I meant the picture with the Mofi speakers.
These on Linton are my DIY stands made of wood with the same measurements as the original stands.

Hello all
I purchased this speakers 3 years ago very happy with them... I am moving to a new house and when packaging it again I have noticed that... serial numbers are not the same or consecutive
One speaker is CIC133 and the other CIC074
This could be a problem sounding wise? In any case they are correctly right and left speakers...
Thanks.

Shouldn't make a difference with halfway proper quality control. Drivers and other components always vary a bit anyway.

not really

I was wondering...

Without the grill there is some diffraction from the protruding edge but the grill ameliorates some of this. Having said that, I don't get pinpoint imaging from them. It's more of a blur.

So... I have had some LS3/5a and those employed felt around the tweeter and I have used that in some that I have built to get better imaging. There has been some discussion of this and wondered if it might help with these?

Thoughts?

Hi does anyone have the topping B200 or B100 driving the Lintons? How is your experience? Like the sound/music?

Well actually I have been a user of Lintons for already 2 years. Just wanting to make the next step with covering the missing octave (I not only listen music but watch movies from time to time), usually my genres are 70/80/90, jazz, funk, soul, the more modern stuff I could listen is some Indie.
That's why I haven't even considered upgrading to another speaker (I don't have acoustic treatment in the room) only DIRAC Live, and I love the "warmth" non fatigating, relaxing sound of this boxes. It's like they hug you. (Yeah lot of random stuff that doesn't make any sense in this forum I know :D)

I think I am one of the few that prefer the Linton sound than the Super Linton that are better and more clear and amazing for modern genres, I saw a video that I could not agree more: Linton is to have the sound there, in the background, doing some other stuff. And supers are good to sit pay attention and listen to them. Particularly in my room the supers will generate more issues and fatigate than anything else.
Hi what is your setup?

I have the Lintons plus 2 sub (SVS SB2000) and a miniDSP flex digital.
Lintons have a wonderful bass for the price. Nice chest punch.
In my house Subs get below 20hz’s in my room and fill some room-modes so the bass is more even. But I wouldn’t recommend these subs without any DSP.

Regarding the SuperLinton, it sounds more modern, more polite, clearer highs but less character to my ears.
Hi which Amp are you using?

Hi is it warm sounding with the lintons?
It sounds good - like Lintons! It drives them well. But I do sometimes turn it up near max which I am sure is increasing the distortion. But in a medium size room the sound great. I will probably get a higher current Hypex or Purifi at some point so I am not pushing the amp so hard.

Audiolab 9000A.

I like the match of Lintons and Audiolab, and 9000 is the top of range.

I recently moved from the Lintons to Mofi SP10 ME and the match between Mofis and Audiolab is not as perfect as it was with the Lintons.

9000 is powerfull and very neutral. Less coloured than other amp brands. Lintons are on the warmer side and warmer+neutral is pleasant. Mofis are more neutral than Lintons, and Audiolab put them on the soul-less side, at least to my liking and with the Lintons background.
Before buying the Audiolab I liked the musical Fidelity Ms6i. That’s a beast!
