Wharfedale Linton 85th Anniversary speaker review & measurements by Erin's Audio Corner

How is sensitivity measured on a Klippel? Pink noise and dBA? Some other signal and other ponderation?

It might be that since the Super Linton presents a bass shelf and usually it's the bass driver that is the less sensitive of all drivers, some of that sensitivity gain might be due to the Super Linton having less bass at a given volume.

I mean, yeah I guess an improvement, bigger box, and improved drivers etc...(including woofer), but I was just hoping for a more budget minded 10" woofer with mid and tweeter from the current Linton.
An anecdote which may be kind-of related to this new model...

I always found there is 'something' about a two cubic foot box with 8" bass-mid driver in it, almost irrespective of the drivers or crossover used, a shorter box often having a 'tubby' sounding mid bass with less extension to balance it. Maybe useful to me only, but I share nonetheless.

I hope it does well and it'll be an excellent match I believe, to the 'new' Quad 33/303 as it is apparently quite sensitive. Meanwhile, those around the world may find some good used Linton Heritage models on the used market at attractive prices as existing owners update/upgrade - well, I can wish, now the more directly 'BBC Derived' models are thousands the pair on the used market unless very old 1970s models and all but worn out!

Right and wrong by Skylabs Audio in the video below.

Right: Probably so. Right in that he feels they don't have as good bass compared to the Linton Heritage. In fact, in this case it may actually be true and not imaginary given Erin's measurements. He should try placing his Super Lintons near the back wall for more bass support.:)
However, I will give him credit for his confusion because he says that the Super Linton goes down lower in frequency vs. Linton Heritage. You can believe that if you read what Wharfedale themselves write about them:

Super Linton:
Frequency response (+/-3dB) 39Hz - 20kHz
Bass extension (-6dB) 32Hz

Original Linton, LINTON Heritage:
Frequency Response (+/-3dB) 40Hz ~ 20kHz
Bass Extension (-6dB) 35Hz

Very confusing given Erin's measurements.

Wrong:That they need a long break in period to get better bass. It took six, seven, eight months before they really (regarding Linton Heritage)...blah blah
Starting at 0:55 in the video:

Edit:
I might mention that Skylabs Audio has also made some nice and informative videos. So I don't diss them. :)

A few notes:

-Sensitivity 88.2 dB so about half as much amplifier power is needed compared to the old , or non-super Lintons, which Erin measured to be 85.1 dB.

Only if the impedance is the same between the two speakers. It's not.

(Edited to add this: I just compared the impedance of the two different versions of the Linton speakers. While not identical, impedance is surprisingly similar between the two. So in this case your estimate is fairly accurate. But it isn't necessarily so.)

I think Erin uses the average of the frequency response from 300Hz to 3kHz with a 2.83V input.

Which center channel speaker matches the best for Lintons 85th?
A lot people says that third Linton is best option, but I dont find it beautiful to stay in the center.. Any suggestions?

Another very good review by Terry
At the end: - "Super Linton are better in almost everythig ...but..do you want that?"

I hope we get these on Spinorama.org soon with EQ too. My Linton sound a lot more clear with the EQ settings. Reminds me of the Q Acoustics Concept 50. Would love get a more dynamic version of the speakers too :) and the stands. I paid $1000 for my Linton on sale with no stands.

Love that the new ones are made for closer wall placement, as I moved into a house with a smaller living room.

Its up now in Spinorama.org, Yay! thank you!

Funny how both Linton's have about the same preference score before and after EQ! Here is where details matter. Like 3db extra dynamics, distortion and extension.

Late purchaser here in the Philippines.
We have a yearly November HiFi Show here and lots of gear go on sale. So I brought home an 85th Linton (with stands for the equivalent of USD1,000) to pair with my Fosi Audio V3 and I am happy enough. An added bonus is that my wife who does not usually go for my music hobby has said she likes my new speakers more than the ones they replaced.

Happy wife, happy life. :D

Congrats on your new speakers! Considering how far they've travelled, that seems like a good deal.
