Welcome New Members to ASR, introduce yourself here.

Hi everyone, I’m part of the DECIBEL team. My work is connected with soundproofing and acoustics. I’m here to introduce myself, follow the discussions, and learn from the community. I’m also happy to share practical acoustic knowledge when it may be useful.

Cheers :)

Hello. I'm an audio/video enthusiast. Over the years, I've been trying to develop this passion, thanks in part to the contributions made on this wonderful forum.

Hey! I'm Jonathan, from around Montréal in Canada . I'm an audio, technology, and code enthusiast. I have been working as a sound system engineer for well over a decade now, for arenas, tours, festivals, and theatres.

I had the chance to learn with vintage gear like the JBL 4530 and the Crown DC300. I used to be very active on the French audio forum back in 2008. Things have changed a lot since Facebook and whatnot. I'm hoping to come back to where my roots are, but this time in English. I don't pretend to be excellent in everything, but I do appreciate good sound, philosophy, and history-related content. I work with pretty much every manufacturer for live entertainment, including audio consoles, processors, and others. But I am pretty much 100% a rookie related to "hi-fi".

Here to learn and share.

Thanks for having me.

Hi, Master.Mg, & Jonathan.

Welcome to ASR.

Hi folks,

I never formally introduced myself here.

I think quite a few members do know me at this point :-)… but I suppose it would be worthwhile to have a little introduction “profile” post nonetheless.

I am very much aligned with most of the views on ASR. I consider myself an “objectivist,” believing that Science/engineering/psychoacoustics/measurements are unequivocally the most reliable way to evaluate the performance of audio gear . However I have also defended why I personally enjoy and can get use out of some subjective reviews and audiophile reports about equipment, using subjective descriptions.

I was extremely happy when a forum like ASR arose which takes a science-oriented approach to audio. A bit of background on why ASR appeals to me (despite my other artsy leanings as well)…

I’ve worked in a pro audio field for 36 years: Sound Design for movies and TV . I grew up loving nature and reading science oriented books, popular science stuff, as well as being a fervent reader of Skeptical Inquirer and Skeptic Magazine. Critical thinking and inquiry about science versus fantasy and pseudoscience developed into an interest in philosophy, epistemology, and the philosophy of science.

Later on, for years I was part of an online community defending science against attacks from various pseudosciences, especially Creationism and Intelligent Design. This involved us explaining theories like evolution, and debating some of the more “sophisticated” proponents of creationism and Intelligent design. It inevitably involved getting down into the nitty-gritty philosophical basics as to the nature science, the scientific method, the epistemological basis and justifications for science, etc. It was tons of fun, a good cause, and always an intellectual workout.

The site included scientists and scientific educators from The Panda’s Thumb, and I was especially motivated when they expressed approval of my contributions on those subjects. In fact, one of my posts countering common creationist misunderstandings, detailing the logic and evidence of evolution with accompanying graphics, became a fairly popular reference there. I was (to my surprise) even quoted by evolutionary biologist Jerry Coyne in his book Faith vs Fact: “why science and religion are incompatible.”

So while I’m not a scientist - it’s not like I can rattle off the details required in every discipline! - I think I have a pretty good grasp on the basic nuts and bolts and I see science as the best way to understand the nature of reality. (Which isn’t a pitch for “naïve logical positivism” :-) ).

The same mindset bled in to my high end audio hobby:

My dad was a Stereo-Review-reading audiophile who graced us with a beautiful system: KEF 105.2 flagship speakers, Carver amplification (including the famous Carver C-4000 preamplifier with “ Sonic holography” - we also had rear channels). So that is clearly where I got the audiophile bug.

But I’ve always been skeptical about the pseudoscience rife within high end audio. I started my own blind testing in the 90s and through the years continue to occasionally do home-brew blind tests of various types of gear. I’ve also spent ungodly amounts of time on the subjective-oriented audiophile forums through the decades defending and explaining the relevance of the scientific method to vetting the performance of audio gear. (with all the scars to prove it). And currently this often includes defending ASR as well.

Some of the main reasons I like ASR and Amir’s work is that, while I do enjoy the casual exchange of listening experiences with other audiophiles, ASR is an oasis away from the pseudoscience and woo-woo. And I can learn from much smarter people here about some of the technical issues in which I lack knowledge (I’m not an EE to say the least - my brain doesn’t seem to do electrical theory very well). Though I have to admit that my favourite Amir reviews and videos are take downs of snake oil and pseudoscientific products. That kind of skeptical work still seems near and dear to my heart :-)

Cheers.

My current system:

Joseph Audio Perspective2 and Thiel 2.7 floor standing loudspeakers.
Conrad Johnson premier 12 tube monoblocks amps
Conrad Johnson premier 16 LS2 tube preamp
Benchmark DAC2L
Benchmark LA4 preamp
Bluesound Node streamer - Ripped CD library and Tidal

Fat Bob S turntable
Acoustic Solid 12” tonearm
Benz Micro Ebony L cartridge
JE Audio HP10 phono stage

Cables …”whatever” :-)

I’m as passionate a Home Theater geek as I am an Audiophile (with a projection based system with surround sound and a special build room) . But I save that stuff for places like AVSForum.
