Hello fellow ASRers, allow me to introduce myself.
Ropeburn aka Doge (in online circles) is a middle aged guy who likes a good sound, but for a reasonable price. As a lover of electronic music since the 90s and with a degree in electronics since the early 2000s, my search has always been about what kind of quality in terms of clarity, punch and bass performance you can get out of affordable gear. 30 years as an amateur musician, which I guess makes me a seasoned expert in producing crap music (
) only reinforced that.
I do not believe in audiophile snake oil, especially if it can't be proven technically, but instead is easily explained away by subjective audiopsychology. I do believe there are two main things: first, objective, tangible and measureable properties of a piece of technology, and then second and most importantly our highly adaptive ears and brains that can do wonders. What we enjoy or not is very much a matter of learning to do so. I have done carefully set up automated double blind tests for example - which revealed that my ears can reliably tell the difference between 192kbps MP3 and FLAC, encoded from the same source, but not anymore above that lossy bitrate.
I take personal pride in knowing my ears' objective limits, which certainly don't get better with age. I heavily suspect not every self-proclaimed audiophile can honestly say the same. Maybe it's an attitude left over from my days as a sergeant at my country's army long ago. You simply do not have time to waste on bullshit that does not give a real advantage to anyone.
The last months I've read a lot here on this forum, and learned a great deal about audio in general, and how measurements translate to real world conditions. Thanks to everyone for that, and Amir in particular. There may even have been the one or the other buying decision influenced by ASR - I got an SMSL DO100 for a very good price (120 Eur) lately, and it sounds very pleasant, neutral and almost perfect - exactly what I was looking for.
I hope to learn further and maybe contribute a little here and there with my audio hamfists and direct language. Chapeau!
