My Black Friday impulse buy came in today. I thought it would be interesting to compare how Seiko executed the same design at two different price points by comparing my new SUR527 with my daily driver SBGA401. What do you think? Is one of these watches 20x better than the other?

As the owner of around 40 watches ranging in retail price from $30 to $11,000, my first answer is of course not!

My second answer is, no way to tell from one picture. Or a thousand pictures.

My third answer is, value is in the mind of the beholder.

Picked this up at a garage sale for $5 on Saturday morning. As new, still with the protective plastic on the back. (also bought an essentially unused band saw for $40)

Just needed a new SR-920SW battery.
Seiko Instruments VD53 movement. Fits me perfectly- no need to adjust even one pin/link. Cool old guy we got talking about Jaguars and he showed me his D type replica- OMG, along with a few other absolute classic cars.

Would want to check them out in person before making that call. Who knows, maybe I'd be fascinated by a second hand moving with only the slightest pulsation, or by a higher level of detailing.

I just got a new Fitbit Sense 2 smartwatch. Not one of those gorgeous mechanical wristwatches but I like it very well: it tracks heart rate, exercise, sleep, etc.

Come to that the new Fitbit is the priciest watch I've bought in many years; (got mine on sale).

As a kid I used to love and buy watches which went down later after having a mobile phone with me but this one I find quite cool:

The question is, is it airtight to 0 bar? :p

I hadn't realized that this level of case restoration was possible, including use of laser welding techniques to fill engravings or heavily eroded areas of the case. Perhaps perfect for my dad's old watch, which he hand-engraved with his SSN:

Stunning! I had never heard of that particular artisan.

This guy is tremendous!

Very good video. The fastidiousness and attention to detail is astounding. I thought I was picky when working with mechatronics/mechanisms/assemblies but this guy goes next level with the laser welding.

Makes me curious about the cost.

Reminds me of a friend who collects (among other things) vintage calculator watches!

Surprised how complex the Mk IV case is :(

I think I would prefer to have it cleaned and serviced, but retain all the marks made by my father wearing it, that make it unique and personal.
