I loved those magic eyes as tuning indicators in some old console radios of the 30-40s.
I grabbed a few out of the alleys when I was a kid, would take them home, fix em up, and later give them away.

Discovered this thread way to late, but just have to post. I have always lusted after McIntosh amps mostly because of the unbelievable design with the incorporation of THE VU meters on the front panel display. As in real life however, love is fickle. Goodbye McIntosh, hello my new passion

The M33 is on my purchase list once they fix Roon.

But I wish they would let you change the VU meter colors. I'd prefer amber to blue/white, to match my other VUs.

Here's what I've spent the last couple of weeks of lockdown making. I took a Velleman VU meter kit and converted it to a Type 1 PPM. Calibrated such that on digital sources, it shows dBFS, on analogue sources, it indicates up to +15dBu.

Not surprised by the number of CDs mastered to 0dBFS flatlined. I've not yet found an LP cut at more than 11dB above 5cm/sec. I've set my turntables to output 0dBu at 5cm/sec at 1kHz.

McIntosh sold off Audio Research to the the AR former sales director, from what I've read. Bankruptcy? I didn't hear that.

I was mixing up the most recent ownership change (McIntosh Group divesting / selling AR) with the prior one 10 years ago.

Either way, the fact that McIntosh Group is selling them in such a manner implies to me that sales aren't going great, which would have implications for future product development and business viability.

Time for Audio Research to start making money by selling a Bluetooth amplifier/speaker.
