VU Meters: Let's See 'Em!!

I was peer-pressured to horizantally-mount a pair of these, under my monitor speakers' pedestals.

They did not improve the music at all, but I'll leave them where they are... ready to impress @amirm, in case he knocks on my front door.:p

Do they have a built in microphone, or do they need to be connected to the source somehow?

Yes, they do have a MIC in each unit and they "calibrate" automatically and probably by a variable gain stage[?].
50dB SPL (A-weighted) is enough to light the initial LEDs and 70dbA makes all the LEDs peak out.

Mine are powered via USB (not battery).
For the price of ($7.00); I don't know how these things can turn a profit.

No it is not an amp, and those only look like VU meters!
It is a gadget I put together many years ago, to test and match those big Russian tubes, as there was nothing available to buy in.
The little toggle in the middle changes the range.

Not exactly VU meters, but get's the job done. Meters can be set to Peak or RMS.

RF transmitter tubes?
They look so bad a-s. :p
Rectifier tubes, used in OTL amps these days.
Monster tubes, matching them was difficult till I made the gadget.

Hee hee, In the MiG-25 ? LOL

The latest status/view (as of June 26, 2024) of dancing DIY IEC60268-17-Compatible 12-VU-Meter Array and all the on-screen peak meters; JRiver MC, DSP EKIO's I/O panels, the cool VB-AUDIO MATRIX I/O Routing Grid, VB-AUDIO Matrix Main Panel. Please refer to my post #931 on my project thread for the details.

Beautiful ole Mc amp !

Nothing like a big McIntosh to say Big American Iron.

And that Flexi-rack @motorstereo , that's beautiful. A lot of laminated timber and painted steel threaded rods there. Impressed!

I am impressed also by the background image of "PORTRAIT IN JAZZ: BILL EVANCE TRIO" since I have recently intensively compared, and always enjoy, Bill Evans jazz piano trio's analog recorded in 1977, remastered (2021) vinyl LP (45-RPM 188-gram) vs. its CD release, the famous album "You Must Believe In Spring". I heard many people recognize this recording as one of the Bill's Schwanengesang performances. If you would be interested, please visit my post #740 on my project thread. :D

Thank you; the flexi was last winter's project which kept me busy for quite a while. It's butcher block which is expensive and I was very nervous about ruining or screwing up something. Thankfully that didn't happen.

The Mac's have been here for 6 years now. None of my previous amps lasted that long so I guess they're here for the duration. The only problem with those 147lb amps is it's getting really tough for this old guy to lift and move them alone. The last time was this winter when I made new butcher block stands for them.

Yep.
Exact reason, why I gave up on my hand built, beloved Russian tubed OTL mono-blocks.
Couldn't lift them, couldn't service them.
Replaced the amps with a stereo Meridian power amp. Though very good, but somehow, I don't listen to them that often any more.
