I'm experimenting with my VU1 dials, they aren't for music, but for Gold or ETF prices they are great.
PXL_20240113_202144870.jpg

This dial shows my average paid gold price and the current spot in relation to it. If gold spot is +5 to +10% the display will go red and i'll sell some to take profits. If it's below -5% the LED will turn green and i'll buy some to lower my average price:

Some test images, grey scale without and with dithering:

They aren't fast enough for music, but you could use them to indicate the status of a volume knob or input or something.

Is his VU meter compatible with IEC 60268-17 VU Specifications especially the ballistic behavior spec? It looks isn't, I assume, for my eyes...

Just for your reference, my DIY 12-VU-Meter Array (ref. here) is/are compatible ( ref. here) with IEC 60287-17.
I also have shared four YouTube video clips of my 12-VU-Meter Array dancing with music.
- Dancing video of my IEC 60268-17 compatible large glass-face DIY 12-VU-Meter Array

with "High Frequency Linearity Check Track" of Sony Super Audio Check CD: #750

_____Part-2: with typical "Full Orchestra Music"-1: #751

_____Part-3: with typical "Full Orchestra Music"-2: #752

_____Part-4: with typical "Jazz Piano Trio Music": #753

Well, maybe they are fast enough.... :

Please note that it is currently showing peak values, and the background image shouldn't show the dB scale from 0 to 100. It's work in progress :) .

It is a shame vu meters are disappearing in new gear. Maybe they'll reappear once ppl miss the little bit of *movement* they bring to a quiet listening session.

I remember one of the many anecdotal "audiophile" hacks for the Squeezebox was to disable the VU meter display because it supposedly introduced noise into the signal. Never saw any measurements to show it's effectiveness.

Sadly your video has been deleted. I suspect because you used music that someone else owns. Maybe you can reupload it with some free tunes?
I'm very interested!

Not sure why the video isn't visible, but it also doesn't really matter.... It seems you were right because I found that even when sending commands directly to the usb port of the meters (circumventing using the url commands), the delay was still too high to make it visually attractive. :(

A shame. But it was never advertised to be fast, so that is fine.

So far i have gold price and FTSE Developed World in my dials. I got a new PC and job, so i don't have much time, but i plan to add a dial for overall energy usage (have bought and installed a Shelly 3EM). I'm pondering how to add my photovoltaic setup too. And it has to move from my PC to a RPi.
