Volume control on SMSL DAC's using MPD > ALSA > SML DAC appears not to be a standard feature

Hell Gents,

I'm running a raspberry Pi4b with usb dac, the SMSL Sanskrit 10-edition MK-II and soemtimes the MK-III. I recently played around with the D6S from SMSL used by a freind of mine.
I noticed the volume and mute function could not be controlled using alsa as this specifci interface was missing on teh D6S. When I run the amixer command on the MK-II or MK-III I get this. Volume control in Linn Kazoo with mixer_type set on "hardware" in mpd.conf effectively using alsa to control the volume is working very fast (ie: realtime) and very smooth.
I'm thinking about buying a new DAC but and I'm wandering how to get to know whether or not a DAC supports this or not. The DS6 certaibnly doesn't. I'm also looking at the SMSL DL100 or DL200 but I can't find any specs on that feature.

Below my setup with the smsl sanskrit MK-II connected using usb. With the D6S this command doesn't show these capabilities

Most likely the USB audio device does not define any volume feature, if it is not listed in amixer. Browsing the alsa-db http://www.alsa-project.org/cardinfo-db/ (locally, google does not seem to have the database indexed): some SMSL devices have volume/mute controls, some don't. The by-far less likely alternative is the device defines the feature, but the alsa usb-audio cannot work with it.

Checking the volume feature is simple, please post complete output of command lsusb -v -d vendorID:productID where vendorID and productID are listed in command lsusb.
Nevertheless, should the XMOS firmware not offer the internal volume control over USB feature, using software volume control in MPD will provide basically identical outcome. The device almost certainly uses digital volume control in the ES9039 DAC chip which does exactly the same operation of division as the software volume in MPD.

These should be listed by amixer -c CARD_ID. If not, please check dmesg -w when attaching the DAC, whether some errors are listed during the device enumeration.

IMO the volume operation in MPD is implemented quite nicely, no sample format conversion involved https://github.com/MusicPlayerDaemon/MPD/blob/master/src/pcm/Volume.cxx Yes there is no ramping as in ES9038Q2M, I do not know if that makes a difference.
 
Yeah this is the volume control "working DAC output:). In this case the SMSL Sanskrit 10-th edition MK-II. I'm looking for a new DAC and kinda like the smsl's as the price/quality is pretty outstanding I'd say. Not sure which one to choose just yet. Price range I'm looking is around €300,-.
