An alarm clock produces the same sound every time every time it rings, and recognition of that familiar sound helps with the waking process. The radio may have any sort of a sound when it goes on, and a sleeper might just incorporate the likely unfamiliar sound into a dream scenario and keep snoozing. I use an alarm clock for that reason.

Always had my radio alarm set to 'The Today Programme' on Radio 4. Get woken up by calm, quiet conversation.

Someone bought me a 'Bart Simpson' alarm clock so I set it up and set the alarm for work the next day. Turns out the alarm is Bart shouting something like 'Hey dude, it's time to wake up and get out of bed!'.

It woke me up but also nearly gave me a heart attack. It was like one level below an R Lee Ermey alarm clock, if such a thing exists. Since then it's been relegated to an ornament.
