I can even remember similar "celebration" of TV behind the iron curtain, in the late Commie era (70s) in Poland. My parents got a Rubin (colour!) TV, as first in the whole neighborhood (which of course had nothing to do with my father being the regional boss of the electronics quasi monopoly ZURT) 
First the family came to watch (what little there was to watch), then the friends and neighbours... All in their best or at least second best outfits.
Jeans and T-shirts etc. became popular more than a decade later.
