G'day,
I've been lurking for a while but I feel like I've gotten really stuck and thought I might ask for a more experienced opinion.
My current setup is:
- Macbook running apple music lossless
- SMSL PS200 (usb in)
- SMSL DA-8s
- DALI concept 6 towers (2.5way, 1 inch soft dome tweeter, 2x 6" woofers, 8ohm)
The room is 3.5 x 5m, speakers are on the shorter wall a bit under 2m apart and I generally listen from around 3m away.
I've had the speakers for a long time and previously used an old 1980's Pioneer amplifier (SA 408, 20W per channel 8ohm) with an rca to 3.5mm cable.
The SMSL has been a pretty massive improvement as far as detail and clarity is concerned, and for the most part I have been quite happy.
Where I'm not quite happy is that it feels that for the speakers to really wake up in the lower end I need to be running the amp at around 37 out of 60, up until then bass is there but it doesn't really have any punch and things like short kick drum hits are just not there. but I find that when I start reaching this level I loose all of the definition I had in the mids and the instruments just start to blend together (it sounds a lot like the old pioneer, just with a better high end).
If you've got this far, thanks, I appreciate it
I've been thinking that this may be distortion from the amp and had my eye on a Topping PA7 (not plus) on sale from an aussie retailer for $509 aud, am I on the right track here or is it more likely a limitation of my speakers? Could I be better off looking for a decent active sub (I'm comfortable setting up the crossover on the laptop)?
Thanks again.
