Hi i am trying to understand how REW works from windows audio interface/drivers perspective.

1) use rew and mic to generate sweeps and target curves (understood)

2) applying eq through software such as Roon or equalizer apo?

So basically we cannot use REW to apply that EQ to the audio and it needs external softwares as above mentioned?

Can REW and tidal work together without Roon?

How does softwares like vlc work with REW?

Is there a new audio driver/interface created in the process? If yes, What happens to external dacs and wsapi modes?

Sorry i am very new to room eq ..soon purchasing the mic :)

Yes, measure with REW, generate the filers in the ‘EQ’ section of REW and then use Roon to apply those filters.

Hello,

Download REW and buy a mic will not exempt from learning to measure - the methods - and above all to interpret the measurements with the right parameters.

REW does measurements, and can generate filters, although you can also do this process manually.

Windows audio is managed by Windows Audio Session API. It can run in either exclusive or shared mode. By default, shared mode is used, allowing for multiple applications to share the audio device, and signal processing such as EqualizeAPO can be applied. Exclusive mode minimizes latency, the primary use being bit-streaming surround sound to an AV receiver.

No additional audio interface is created when using EqualizerAPO, it just hooks into WASAPI.

If you are trying to measure a surround system, you will need to install ASIO4ALL. Room EQ Wizard by default uses a Java audio output which can only output 2 channels. ASIO4ALL acts as a translation layer so you can output test tones on 8 channels (7 surround + 1 LFE). This doesn't effect normal audio playback, only REW.

Got it :) which obviously means no EQ can be applied when strictly in exclusive mode?

Yes, if you are bit-streaming to an audio device then EQ on Windows won't work. For example, you cannot apply EQ to Dolby TrueHD or DTS HDMA signals, because those are decoded by an AV receiver. In that scenario you would need to use EQ on the receiver itself, or externally after the processing stage.

For a simple stereo setup, EqualizerAPO should always work.
