I got this intriguing email marketing today:

"We want to thank you for your business with Analogue Productions and Acoustic Sounds. As a Series Subscriber, you've trusted us to deliver a batch of cherry-picked titles that we hope are among the most treasured part of your collection. Delivering those titles on a reliable schedule hasn't always been easy, and we appreciate the patience that you've shown and the feedback you've given us. You are among our most valued customers.

As a thank you, we'd like to offer you the chance to secure the best-available serial-numbered edition of our first Ultra High Quality Record (UHQR) by Analogue Productions - the U.S. version of The Jimi Hendrix Experience/Axis: Bold As Love.

This will be a definitive, handmade, limited-run reissue and is the debut effort of Analogue Productions' reintroduction of the revered UHQR originally introduced by JVC Japan in the 1980s.

This UHQR is newly remastered by Bernie Grundman from the original analog master tapes. Each UHQR will be pressed at Acoustic Sounds' industry-leading pressing plant, Quality Record Pressings (QRP), using a specially-formulated, proprietary Clarity Vinyl on a manual Finebilt press with attention paid to every single detail of every single record. The 200-gram records will feature the same flat profile that helped to make the original UHQR so desirable. From the lead-in groove to the run-out groove, there is no pitch to the profile, allowing the customer's stylus to play truly perpendicular to the grooves from edge to center. Clarity Vinyl allows for the purest possible pressing and the most visually stunning presentation. Every UHQR will be hand inspected upon pressing completion, and only the truly flawless will be allowed to go to market. Each UHQR will be packaged in a deluxe box and will include a booklet detailing the entire process of making a UHQR along with a hand-signed certificate of inspection. This will be a truly deluxe, collectible product.

-------

Each Axis UHQR will be available as two versions: Mono and Stereo. The Stereo release will be limited to 5,000 copies, while the Mono release will be limited to 1,500. The deluxe boxes will be gold foil numbered. Each copy will retail for $100."

Yowza -- $100 for one LP.

Fancy packaging aside, could the extra flat profile really make a difference?

Are they saying the record is perfectly or almost perfectly flat? If that's their big point, I don't see that as being audible in music from a "
normally flat" record. It will come down to the mastering as always IMO( and he is one of the best). All the same inherent distortions (good or bad as you like) will still be there, its still a record after all, and if 180 grams isn't enough for someon, going to 200 to make much difference, doubt it. And really, what kind of quality are these decades old master tapes in? that's the advantage of digital, ones and zeros are pretty much there for a lot longer than magnetized domains on tape.

How would one be able to tell if Jimi's trademark distortions are distorted or not?
