TV Speakers Recommendation?

Friend asked me which speakers he should buy for his home TV set.

They are very much not an audiophile. Quite the opposite really.

Still, the fact they asked me means they want to get something nice (since I'm kinda obsessed with audio quality).

Considering that they won't be doing any kind of room treatment or EQ, what should I tell them?

I was leaning towards a cheap soundbar... but if you guys have something better in mind then I'm all ears (well... eyes).

Sonos works very well in this kind of application. We have these throughout and they are dead simple and work well. Start with a soundbar, add a sub (or two), some outdoor speakers, etc.

I bought some PA speakers (Yamaha DBR-10) thinking I need a lot of power. But in reality I don't and a pair of JBL 308Ps would have been fine. The PA speakers work great, there is no issue with them, however some people don't like the fact that they have fans; but I don't hear them during normal viewing. It's funny, the people saying you need 115 dBa at the listening position are also worried about fan noise....

If you only want to replace small tiny speakers inside the TV then buy $50 soundbar is a good choice.

Thanks guys. I sent them a link for the Hisense AX5140Q (bar + sub + speakers) which was one of the RTINGS recommendations.

I’d rather choose standalone soundbar such as Sonos Beam for that kind of price. Standalone and wireless will make beautiful appearance.

For a TV setup, I’d go with a pair of reasonably priced powered bookshelf speakers like the Edifier R2750DB MKII. They’ll give you a much wider, fuller stereo sound than most soundbars, with plenty of bass and no need for a separate amp. They have Bluetooth with LDAC, HDMI audio input, and are good enough to double as a proper music listening system. They’re not a tiny, sleek lifestyle product designed to disappear into the room though, they’re fairly large speakers, so you need enough room for them and they may not pass the "fits any décor" test for everyone at home.
