So I may be changing direction on my turntable decision and would appreciate some guidance.

I currently have an AT-LP5X. I’m not dissatisfied with it per se, but I think I could do better for the same money. I’ve arranged an RMA (but don’t necessarily need to return the TT - I could simply keep it). Before proceeding, based upon feedback from all you fine folks, I thought I should ask for your recommendations.

Here goes.

Let’s assume that I’m currently wide open on TT options except for two requirements: 1) My budget is +/- 600$ and 2) I have a sunk investment in 3 AT-HS6 headshells with AT-VM95C, AT-VM95EN and AT-VM95SH styli. I think I have a soft preference for direct drive though the options there seem somewhat more limited.

I’ve already been looking at the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO, the Fluance RT85, the Audio Technica AT-LP7 (I know this is over my budget, but I may have a coupon), and the U-Turn Audio Orbit Special.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts. I really appreciate your help.

I don't have a recommendation. If I were buying a turntable I'd be looking at the AT LP120USB (whatever the current version is). It doesn't seem too cheap and it's not crazy expensive, it's direct drive, and it comes ready-to-play with a phono cartridge, built-in preamp, and USB for digitizing records.

I like direct drive because there are no belts or drive wheels to wear out. I've got a 40-year old Techincs (not the high-end DJ model) and it still works fine. But it hasn't been in-use constantly for 40 years. For the past few decades, I only use it for occasionally digitizing a record that's not available digitally.

So I actually had the AT-LP120XBT-USB (the replacement for the LP120USB) for a period of time, but I returned it for the AT-LP5X because it had a bunch of DJ bells and whistles I’d never use. The AT-LP5X is very similar in terms of specs. All I really need though is a deck … and that’s it. No BT, USB or preamp. The reality is that I’ll never rip LPs to disk or link up a set of headphones. If I ever did I’d likely use something like a Scarlett or M-Audio interface or BT headphone amp. I’d prefer to keep anything not specifically needed to play vinyl outside of the deck to reduce vibration and EMI. I’ve been staring at the Fluance for that reason. It’s nice and simple. Anyway, that’s where my head is. Thank you for the post. PS - I think I’m leaning toward DD as well though the DD options in my price range seem limited.
