Was on youtube for something else and Google must have read my mind that I would be in the mood to watch this delightful BBC documentary about Mike Oldfield and Tubular Bells. Gosh, this music is just as fresh today for me as when I first heard it in 1970s as I got into hifi.

Dedicate an hour please and watch this. It is so well done and a story that needs to be heard:

It brightened my evening so much.

Thanks, will watch, Tubular Bells has always been up there for me with other "can only be listened whole" prog rock albums like Thick as a Brick and Close to the Edge.

The private side of mike oldfield, great documentary, as allways from BBC, perfect for this I-have-nothing-to-do sunday, thanks amir!

As an interest ASR reader: what stands on top of the monitors behind his mixing console ?

Lol ... He has a Kester soldering iron at his desk. No idea what those triangular speaker things are.

That was a fascinating story and behind the scenes look. Although, I can't really say the music resonates with me strongly.

I remember when this came out several years ago (I've hit that age when most anything came out "several" years ago). An interesting and yet somewhat sad tale of a troubled genius IIRC. A very revealing look behind the music.

A wonderful lost hour!

Also, probably one of the very few pieces of music that are enhanced when played from a scratchy vinyl on a cheap turntable. As if scratches, pitch variability, and rumble were meant to be a part of the composition.

Thanks for posting that!
It brought back loads of memories and I learned for the first time that the Virgin Record Warehouse where I bought so many of the LPs sitting in the rack to my left now was illegally importing them - all I knew was me and my mates used to go there because they were pile 'em high sell 'em cheap!
Marvellous music, amazing man.
Also I didn't know that he was part of the Sallyangie which I loved, until today.

After viewing it til the end: what a wonderful lovely documentary and a musican, who is himself in the pure.

How can this hitten for 7 years for me? Thanks again for this hint.

Now I must spend some money for better headphones, to dive deeper into this sphere of music (l'm looking forward to your HP reviews).

Thanks to share this excellent documentary. I really enjoyed it and learned a lot about the genesis of the one of the first album I get when I was young. ASR is definitely THE place to learn of lot not only about audio devices but also about the music itself!
thanks Amir!

Actually I wonder if there is some sort of advertising push going on. I got the OPs documentary from a YouTube hint but I've never been interested in this album. The nearest I would have got to Mike Oldfield was his playing with Kevin Ayers.

Is this the same doc?

The original uploader closed their account, and I randomly stumbled on this post.

You should hear the just released SDE 50th Anniversary BluRay Atmos remaster, it's really incredible!
A SuperDeluxeEdition (SDE) exclusive, available in BluRay Audio, CD, and Rice Krispie's version.
It also contains the unreleased demo of a planned – but scrapped – Tubular Bells 4, which was made five years ago!
A must have for any surround system owner though it may be sold-out already.
