TLDR: relative to the included narrow hole tips, the wide hole tips have more bass (< 350) and more treble (> 3k), and the foam ones have more bass but less treble. The differences are slight, and the narrow hole ones (used in Amir's measurements) seam to be roughly more harman compliant.

For anyone else curious, here is a comparison of the frequency response I found of the various included tips (credit to @Loomynarty ?):

I also found a similar graph from "therollo9" (is this @therollo9 ?)

(the blue line doesn't say what tips where used, but I assume they are the narrow ones)

Both graphs claim to be measured on a clone IEC60318-4 compliant ear simulator (which is probably why they look different to Amir's GRAS 45C measurements)

(If you click my links, and scroll down to the button right area, you should see download buttons to get the raw measurement data if you want to import into another software to do a more fine grained comparison, but I couldn't be bothered.)

Hi apologise if this has been asked before in the 148 pages, i have just aquired an old circa 2001 sony discman, which has only 5mw of output, would it drive these IEMs, or would i need an analogue amp, it has a .7v line out, + optical combo socket, if so is their anything cheap that will do the job, thanks in advance for answers, the cd player is Sony D-EJ835

You will be fine.

Sensitivity: 117.5dB/Vrms (@1kHz)

Thanks for answers, i have one that appears in my e.mail, but doesen't appear here ?, have been doing some more research, i wasn't aware you can convert an optical digital output to usb, i have a Topping NX4 sat in a drawer doing nothing, this also has a 3.5 mm line in, also have a Quedelix 5k in my bedroom system, so would be able to use my collection of normal over and on ear headphones from optical.

Cheers Chris

Are you looking for the cheapest solution to connect the optical out from the CD player to either your NX4 or Q5k? I don't think there is a simple solution for converting TosLink to USB. Solutions would usually involve some sort of intermediate device like a PC or RaspberryPi to do the conversion. It's probably easier to just buy a cheap DAC/Amp with Toslink input - something like the Fosi Audio SK02 might fit the bill: https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/fosi-audio-sk02-dac-hp-amp-review.52952/

Maybe something like this?

[EDIT]
nope, just as they specify

  • Please note that it can’t be connected directly to a USB device like a DAC, it must be connected to a USB host like a computer.

Thank for the responses, yep as i have now discovered by research and your replys, i can't do what i want to do, it does seem as has been suggested you can do it with a raspberry pi, something else i have lying around doing nothing, but i don't think i would be able to do the ( what looks to me ) complex Linux configuration required, the other option as has been suggested is to buy another portable dac/amp that has a Toslink input have looked at xDuoo XD05 Plus, which means, selling some of these things in drawers doing nothing, i am a terrible horder of audio kit lol, any other suggestions other than XD05 gratefully received

At that price, why not just buy a new CD player? (or just rip all your CDs and use your phone).

(I found the FiiO Q7, which is cheaper but still absurdly expensive and powerful)
