Topping MA4 Review

Don't you think 'monster' speakers would require equally monster overseas freight charges?
Neodymium or otherwise. ;)
Obviously the price would be a lot higher.

I'm interested in what they would come up with from a design exercise POV, I'm not personally in the market for new speakers.

A very decent V with minimum at 1khz cant sound bad. Good way to start.

Oh I get it. Geez, took me a minute. You're threatening to dox me by using the fact that I helped Amir with some legal insight about defending against potential defamation claims. Why don't you explain for us your reasoning and what you hope to accomplish.
incorrect

They were just $400 including delivery to my country, but the listing disappeared. Hopefully Topping is aware of air leak issues and they are fixing production.
kinda curious how they compare at low end with the Kali lp-unf 4 inches , which have 55hz F3 with very low distortion . i think they are direct competitors and the Kalis is a hard one to beat.

Absolutely right. Again, I don't know, but I suspect that Topping are good at 'lessons learned' and 'preventing recurrence'. If so, we should see even great improvements and diversity with their speakers.
Welp, thanks to all of you early adopters for your beta testing efforts, at least.

About $450 on AliExpress. Unclear from the listing if that's for a single speaker or a pair. I'm guessing it's the former.
The AliExpress says "1 piece" so it is a single speaker for $450, but it is an active. So $900 for an active that plays this low. Would love to see what they could do with a "big brother" version with a 6.5" woofer, maybe for l.t. $1500? Bet the distortion numbers would be much improved.

We're now seeing speaker releases from some providers like Aiyima and Topping who revolutionized pricing in high end audio electronics. I think this bodes exceedingly well for the price of highly performant bookshelf speakers over the next couple of years. I can imagine that the producers of $3-10k high end speakers have to be getting kinda nervous about now.

Nuyes, thank you for your fine review, and your many other interesting and valuable contributions.
Seems quite expensive for a reasonable small speaker given it's cost per speaker.

Topping definitely seem to be on the right track though!

With the odd form factor, that distortion figures (absent from the website, by the way), poor tone controls, no standard way to mount them, no grille, no ground wire,... 900 bucks is not competitive, at all.

If you order from taobao, they are approx USD167 each. Not sure about freight or import tax though.

Definitely a consideration if the distortion numbers were better.

@JohnYang1997 sent me the data from their own measurement. The data is very similar to the one from @Nuyes.

This is good and yield a high preference score of 5.9 (and 8.1 with a perfect subwoofer).
If you add an eq to it the scores goes up to 6.6 (and 8.8 with a perfect subwoofer and an eq).

You can visualise the eq and see that the tonal balance does not change but the ER and SP curves are flatter!

900 $ (maybe a little less in EU), that's not cheap at all for a small budget monitor and not worth the price : distorsion figures are not that bad but not extraordinary, bass response si Ok for the size but not extraordinary too (not better than some competitors), its deep size is idosyncrasic (not easy to set on a bookshelf or a desk), no EQ integrated, and built quality not top at all (the leakage and maybe other things)

You can have more for less with, for instance, the Kali In Series and for approximately the same price you can go for the Neumann KH 80, much better performance, flexibility, reliability and client service, brand reputation, made in EU. The choice is easy.

This Topping may be competitive in the chinese market where price is divided by more than twice, but not in North America or Europe.

It's a not only to blame on tariffs ; the fact is Topping has entered the monitor market halfway, this first attempt is at the same time too much sophisticated for the price (in China) and not enough for performance and build quality (elsewhere).
@TOPPING : go back to design, R&D and production control, we all know you can -and have to- do much better ! Please get rid of your Achilles Heel !

i am sure $900 is not Topping price, just some random seller on aliexpress and that listing has already been removed. Topping listed them at 1200 CNY (perfectly fine for what you are getting if they fix that air leak of course)

With all the pros and cons, I'm glad that I no longer buy ready-made speakers anyway, but design and build them myself.

But what I find admirable is the port that Topping has designed. It's a bit of a shame that it wasn't possible to take a closer look at it during the test. This is because the port seems to work exceptionally well (because it is quiet).

These speakers remind me of Iload MM. Only those are even smaller and also play down to 50 Hz. But I didn't really like them, I think these will be more serious.

A question - Why is there such a huge difference between the THD data of another third-party data measured in the anechoic chamber and that of this review?
