Is it worth it to get the E70 over the D50 III?
i'm planning to buy the L70 or A50 III as AMP.

You can combine them however you like.
You can also stack the D/A 50 III and the E/L 70 on top of each other, a 2mm difference in depth doesn't matter.

The L70 has significantly higher performance, relay-based volume control and the much better XLR socket.
The D50 III is on par with the E70 in terms of measurements (less than 0.1% SINAD difference) and has EQ via USB.
Probably the combination with the best price/performance ratio in terms of balanced connection, measured values and maximum output power.

Conversely, E70 with A50 III would not be a sensible combination for me.

Excuse my lack of experience, but the audible click when changing the volume is normal because it's relay based, right?
Just got one and wanted to be sure xD

Hello, and sorry if this has been asked before
Does anyone know if the L70 is able to convert from rca to xlr when used as a preamp?
Thanks for reading!

Yes. You can do RCA in -> XLR out:

Can’t decide if I want e70 velvet or SMSL d400 pro to go with my SMSL h400
Maybe same design, same look could be a point if optics matter?

I would also take the D400 Pro with the H400. They are devices from the same line and generation and are coordinated with each other.

Today I got r5 error code on my L70. Power cycle resolved it, but my headphones are too expensive to play around with amp that throws errors randomly.

firstly with the error code r5 nothing passes through and that's why it turns on protection when something doesn't work for it. Secondly even the most expensive headphones in the world you buy a second one. You have one ears and hearing for the rest of your life, start worrying about your ears and hearing. You probably don't want to imagine what will happen to you when an explosion occurs while you have headphones on your ears.

Topping FAQ:
r5
Amplifier circuit outputs abnormal DC voltage.
· Turn down the volume of this unit, turn it off and let it cool down for 1 minute before restarting it.
· Disconnect other devices, turn this unit off and cool it down for 1 minute and then restart it. If the problem still persists, your unit may be defective. Please contact the store where you purchased it.

@Sokel post has me concerned:

Grandpa, is that you?? :)

There is a lot of evidence that DC output can also be produced by certain songs, independent of normal or headphone amplifiers.
in that case the L70 would simply have been overly cautious in protecting your headphones. Perhaps this is not the case with another HPA?

DC protection is a good thing - maybe try establishing there’s a problem with the amp first? Some audio has DC offset. I run into material my RME doesn’t like often enough that I’ve just turned on its DSP subsonic filter.

Nothing was playing, the amp was off (on standby), so the amp wasn't warm or anything like that.

I've turned it on a couple of times during the day just to see if it would post again, but it didn't.

So now is it safe to use, I don't know. Maybe I'm just being too cautious.

I would measure it,along with what comes before it (DAC,etc)
And not just once,I would turn it on and measure once and then after couple hours, rinse and repeat couple more times.
Connect some sacrificial headphones if you have any, like the iems that come with phones,we usually have a drawer full of them.

If nothing was playing songs is not the problem and I wouldn't trust to connect nice headphones to it if I was not 100% sure.

I also got the r5 error once, but it didn't scare me because I read about it here. I have E70&L70 connected with a trigger. It seems to me that it didn't communicate with the E70 DAC. (I don't know if it's the current from the mains or maybe something from the DAC cables). I turned off the L70 at the back and turned it on again no later than 10s. The error and the problem disappeared. The set continues to play correctly, without problems.

In addition, the correct practice in the event of the r5 error is to disconnect the headphones. Under no circumstances put the headphones on your head. Restart the L70 device, only when it starts correctly can you connect the headphones and still not put them on your head, just listen holding them in your hand to see if they play normally.

Hello,
Is this a recording error or is the sensitivity in Preamp mode for XLR input/output in high gain mode really only 1.9V instead of 3.8V? I guess there won't be an error because the sensitivity for low gain is not doubled either. In the DAC E70 menu you can set 5V or 4V at 0.0dB. How many dB would you have to go down to, with the 4V setting, to not exceed 1.9V?
