Topping E50 II DAC is up on the Topping Store

Great update for the already excellent old E50. I wonder if there is an audible difference between similarly priced d50 iii (or more expensive dx5 ii) and e50 ii with RCA outputs. In theory, E50 had the "Velvet" akm signature sound. In reality, it was never proven by any measurements here.

So, would there be an audible difference?
Absolutely no. There is a very long thread (more than necessary) thread about DAC sound signature, and the answer is no.

All DAC you listed has SINAD > 110dB and there is no chance for human ear to hear such difference.

I could pair new devices and there was no need to turn on pairing mode or physical confirmation on the DAC. Therefore, any passerby can do the same and connect to the DAC. The best practice is switchable pairing mode, and maybe separate confirmation to accept new devices.
Oh. I get what you're saying now. Yeah, I suppose that would be good extra level of pairing protection. An option to switch that would be cool. Personally, I like it just the way it is. It's easy & convenient. I'd be annoyed having to do another step. A good thing to note though, is that when you have a device actively connected to the E50 II, another paired device will not be able to hijack the connection. It will not be able to connect.

While this may be true, as a good DAC should not have a sound signature, the filters on this E50 II do noticeably change the presentation of the audio. More so than any other DAC I own that has multiple filter options. So, I'd definitely advise the people that are picking this up, to play around with the filters to see what they like best.

A much more practical and flexible option is to use EQ :). It is your headphone/Speakers that need EQ to perform best and filters just can't adapt to that

Very true (I only listen to music, EQ'd the way I like). However, the filters seem to affect the attack & release of the signal. So, its not so much frequency response as it is the level of intensity ("in your face" vs. "relaxed", is the best way I can describe it). For example, the difference between F2 and F3 (the default filter), is very noticeable.

I have 2 questions and thank you in advance for your answers. The user manual states that the E50 II has 3 built-in preset equalizers. Should I understand this to mean, for example, PEQ1 - enhanced bass, PEQ2 - enhanced treble, or are they all set to flat from the factory? Does it make sense to power the E50 ll via a separate power connector, even though my device provides enough voltage for power supply along with data transfer?

The 3 EQ presets are not flat. As soon as you change the value of a filter, it's saves though. So, it's very easy to set the presets to flat, and start from scratch. It's not necessary to power the unit with another cable if the USB data input is fed enough power, but I do have the power input connected to a charger. This way, I can use the USB data input to connect to a different device if I want, and not have to worry about powering the DAC.

I reckon the competition in the DAC market has gotten so intense that even Topping is putting their entire pre-DX5 II product lineup to dry.

Now here's hoping for a single box that combines the E2x2 with the DX5 II. :p

Ok, this might sound a little dumb so my apologies. I am interested in the E50ii as a preamp and dac combo for an Audiolab M-PWR power amplifier.

Can I use this as a dac/preamp simultaneously?

I wish to connect my digital sources as per normal feeding the dac and use the preamp to send the signal to the power amplifier.

Yep

I currently have the E50 with the P50 linear power supply (for shits and giggles). Currently running it using a barrel plug but I'd have to swap it for a tiny usb-A to usb-C cable.

I've been eyeing the E70 Velvet to match it with my Wiim Ultra. Now I wonder when the E70II will be anounced. Going all silver to match the rest.

I use one PEQ filter on each of my speaker channels to calm an SBIR-induced bass peak for each standmount that results from me placing them farther back to take advantage of room reinforcement and get more bottom-end extension (in-room my speakers are able to hit F3 of 36Hz, F6 of 33Hz, and F10 of 31Hz). Originally I was using my WiiM Ultra to do this, but I decided to take advantage of the E50 II’s capabilities and I applied the per-channel PEQ cut filters in the DAC so I was able to disable the EQ entirely in the WiiM. This DAC is just incredible for the money. The PEQ adjustment was amazingly easy using the Topping Home app!

A low cutoff frequency of 31 Hz with bookshelf speakers -> LOL

I have owned this DAC for about 10 days and for those who use the PEQ function I highly recommend it. Control via Topping Home is seamless. Of course, even without PEQ it is still a great DAC. Even though I don't need another amplifier, I ordered a Topping mini 300 for it and I like this combination.

On the E50II, is PEQ only activated via USB?

Assuming you are talikng about the built fine tuning filters, not (PEQ dx5 ii uses the same circuitry, so these shouldn't make any difference between e50 abd Dx5) .

1. I did with other Topping dacs. Easy to change with RC without looking. Just click 20 times quickly on the filters button without looking at the dac, so I don't know what filter you are using. Then start changing them without looking and see if I still hear the difference. I personally can't chose any filter that sounds better than the rest. Not even sure if I hear this difference in my room/headsets.

2. Why this difference never shows up on measurements then?

@JaccoW I wonder too whether they're waiting on AKM's next flagship chip or if they will just add new features (PEQ I do in jriver, but might make it more versatile, give me a physical on/off button please, none of this grubby touch-screen, maybe better built-in psu if that's necessary).

E70V is not a good profile mate for the Mini 300, so I learned :D
