Topping E50 II DAC is up on the Topping Store

OK, so I upgraded to the new software version 1.66. To quote a beloved president: it’s a wonderful version, made by wonderful people! The DAC worked for about 15 minutes, and then... well, we all know what happened next!

Hey!

I've got a Topping E50 II for my new Violectric HPA V340, updated it to v1.66 and configured it without any issues. Mostly working great.

One bug I've noticed: when I change tracks in Tidal (macOS app, exclusive mode), the sample rate doesn't update correctly unless I skip next and then back to the previous track. It may be a Tidal issue, but I didn't notice the same behaviour with my Burson DAC/amp.

Small question: is there any respected source of EQ curves for Arya Stealth?

I'm not sure what the technical advantage to using USB vs Optical/Digital COAX would be
Plug into the Schiit Schtreamer, a coming transport without spinning parts.

Any old portable $40 CD reader with USB is just as good, but then you don't get the ripping.

Updated to 1.66 and no issues. As far as power is concerned, when I stream DSF (DoP) from my Squeezebox Touch to my E50 II though the USB (UAC2), I will get an E-4 error (repeatable) unless using the Jameco wall wart I mentioned earlier. So there is definitely something about power delivery affecting the DAC. Not saying it's for all scenarios but obviously it can be for some. Older USB 2.0 devices like the Touch seem to not be able to send enough power while processing high resolution streams possibly. Treating a big DAC like this with a display as a dongle is a proven no go with at least my scenario. The additional power is needed or the DAC is nothing but an E-4 brick. This doesn't happen with my D30 Pro, E70V, or E70 in the same setup. There's alot to like about DAC's with internal power supplies.

Yea, apparently DSD conversion on the chip requires a decent amount of power and some clients won't be able to provide the juice it needs. I'm glad they have given the additional power input USB-C connection for that. I just have dedicated power supplies connected to them so don't need to worry about it.

I am sure there is a rational reason to use DSD in 2026, but I can't think of one. DSD was a reasonable solution for archival of analog tapes back in the 90s considering the limitations in processing power at the time. Unfortunately it is very hard to process in any way, so EQ, mastering etc. is done in PCM (DXD) and converted back to DSD.

I wonder if some these issues can be traced back to quality control? I got my E50 II, update the software, installed it, and promptly forgot about it weeks ago. It has not asked for my attention even once.

The only difference I can figure (vs the E50 used one of my other setups) is that the spdif signal syncing/locking seems (ever-so-slightly) more robust. But that could just be placebo

Same, and I hope it stays like this :)
